In 1850, John Prentice bought land adjacent to High Street from the Hamricks and started a sawmill along with a gristmill which he also ran until 1862 when it burned down. He then moved his business over to Elm Road which he ran until his death in 1880. Because of this early history, Oxford has been known as one of the most important cities within the United States because of its role in developing American culture during the 19th century
