Oxford, Ohio is home to a rich history of hard gun cases. This ordinance was repealed in 1957 after Mayor John Fritchett successfully lobbied the Ohio Supreme Court to rule that sidewalk carry was not a protected right under state law. In 1984, Oxford became one of six cities in Ohio to pass Ordinance No. 5222 which regulated concealed carry permits and criminal record checks for applicants who wished to obtain a permit. This ordinance allowed anyone with a valid concealed pistol permit from another state or country to apply for an Oxford concealed pistol permit without having their criminal record checked. In 1993, Oxford passed an ordinance that made it illegal for any person over 21 years old to possess or transport unregistered assault weapons within the city limits without first obtaining a special permission from City Hall. This ordinance remains in effect today and is one of the few laws prohibiting assault weapons within Oxford confines. In 2006,Oxford became one of two cities – along with Centreville Heights – in Ohio that enacted legislation legalizing universal background check requirements for all potential gun buyers regardless of race or sex.[1] This legislation went into effect on July 1st,2006 and requires all customers who wish to purchase a gun online or at any retail store must provide their name, date of birth, Social Security number (if available), and other personal information such as driver’s licenses if they are unable to provide those details verbally.[2]

On December 12, 1830, Nathaniel Ames became first Mayor of Oxford when he was elected over incumbent John Gwynn. In 1830, Oxford became an independent city under the name of Lima. On July 12, 1836, it merged with nearby Malden to form what is now Defiance Township. Malden had been founded by Captain Isaac Humphreys in 1798 as a trading post on the Great Lakes between Detroit and Lake Erie. Humphreys named his station after his old home in Cambridgeshire (Uxbridge) England where he had been born in 1757. He sold his holdings to John Evans in 1800 and moved back to America where he started a flour mill at Malden which became one of the largest mills on the Great Lakes until it closed in 1906. It wasn't until 1840 that Lisbon Township was created from parts of Defiance Township east of Ottawa Street/Route 811 when settlers began moving into this area following news reports about fertile land near Cincinnati along the Scioto River ValleyAvailable for purchase at $1 per acre
