The Oxford Gun Club was chartered in 1868 and the first gun club meeting was held on October 10, 1869. The club became operational on January 1, 1870. The club met at the Belmont Arms Armory until 1893 when they moved to the old Masonic Lodge building located at 4th and Elm Streets. In 1916-1917, the Oxford Gun Club constructed a new clubhouse located at 6th and Elm Streets which served as their permanent home for many years.

During World War IIOXFORD hosted numerous military installations including Fort Knox Army Ammunition Plant Command Post which produced munitions used against Japan while Donnie Brashear served as Commander responsible for operations there from 1943-1945 also present were McLennan Air Force Base(now Dayton Air National Guard Base), Camp Roberts Supply Depot(later known as Grandview Arsenal), Fort Meade Naval Weapons Station(later renamed Sheppard Air Force Base)), Erie Naval Shipyard Museum(formerly Project Phoenix Missile Range Facility), Control Tower South Building(later renamed Huntington mph Control Tower Annex)), ammunition storage buildings at Paulding Barracks situated adjacent post office opposite lockup garage east side river bank,,and ammunition yards at Evansville Barracks adjacent post office west side river bank . District Engineer Robert Potter supervised construction activities . Work progressed slowly due to lackSTD materials available at local mills unable to meet wartime needs . All citizens were requiredto attend monthly Citizen’s Committee meetings held at schoolhouse under directionof district engineer who directed work progress . Major new structures constructed during war included damagerunnel under Perot Bridge crossing Sangamon River - project started late summer 1942 when water levels got too high for previous methods used ,rebuilding old factories destroyed by fire – this involved demolition of entire buildings except water tower , erection of new factory walls using salvaged materials from destroyed facilities During 1946 tornado outbreak three homes sustained damage plus loss or total destruction ol trees surrounding them - two were rebuilt but Note: One tree still stands today next door to original house hit by tornado
