Oxford, Ohio is a small town in the state of Ohio. The population was 3,898 at the 2010 census. It is located in Muskingum County. The town was founded in 1836 by James K. Polk and others as part of the newly formed township of Athens. Oxfords first settler was Nicholas Rheaume, who arrived in 1837 and built a cabin on what is now the north side of Oxfordtown Road. Robert Patterson also settled here around this time; he opened a store and tannery on York Street in 1840. In 1846, David Henschel bought land east of Oxfordtown Road from Andrew McCoy for $3 per acre (1¢ per foot). He built an elegant mansion there called "The Oaks" which still stands today. Nathaniel Eaton purchased The Oaks from Henschel in 1876 for $10,000 (about $160,000 adjusted for inflation). Eaton served as mayor of Oxford from 1886 to 1888 and as a congressman from 1888 to 1893 under President Grover Cleveland. From 1895 until his death in 1916, Eaton was secretary ofstate under William McKinley during his first term as president. In 1925, when Oxford Township merged with Athens Township to form Athens-Oxford Township, James Kipperman became the first chairman of that new municipality's board of trustees On January 1st 1951 James Kipperman died suddenly at age 67 after many years serving as an influential member of that board He had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer three weeks beforehand
Oxford, Ohio was founded in 1814 by a group of Englishmen led by Joshua Norton. The town developed around a small business district and the Oxford Academy, which served as a school and college. In 1830, the town became an independent village under the jurisdiction of the University of Miami. By 1865, Oxford had reached its peak population with over 1,500 residents. However, during the Great Depression, Oxford lost many of its residents and businesses. In 1935, Oxford reverted to its previous name of Nortonville.
