Oxford, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Muskingum County. The population was 97,521 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Muskingum County after Cleveland and Dayton. It is also the largest city in the Greater Cincinnati metropolitan area, which has a population of 627,326 as of 2019. Oxford was founded by General George Washington on December 12, 1788 as Athensburg and named for his birthplace of that name in Hampshire, England. The town site chosen by General Washington was located on high ground between two forks of Wooster Creek near what is now Cardington Township and where today's University Circle sits. The townsite had been used for several decades before President George Washington arrived to survey it on January 14, 1789 with James Kappledge as his surveyor. The original plat showed foursquare miles (10 km²). In 1802 John Anderson platted Oxford from parts of Scioto Township north to south and east to west; this plat included land leased from Athensburg residents about 50 acres (20 ha) wide at $1 per acre ($/ha). By 1807 Cambridge Township had also been platted with lots near present day Ironton Road and Park Avenue within what would become known as Cambridge Heights neighborhood; this area became known as Old Oxford along with portions of other nearby townships until they were annexed into Muskingum County in 1821 when those areas were reorganized into new counties according to Pennsylvania Dutch custom. In 1830 Henry Prentice organized a Methodist church among others in what would become known as Presbyterian Church Square; he named it Princeton square because Princeton University was then located adjacent to Scranton Road on its southern edge just east of where Main Street now intersects Fifth Avenue across Second Street between Elm and Spring Streets - hence "Princeton" or "northwest" section being uppermost surface facing northeast - yet Princeton square still remains unoccupied today largely due to lack of development interest over time despite efforts by developers such as David Moulton who purchased many properties including part ownership in Scranton Utilities Company The first post office opened at Oxford on October 16th1834 under arrangement between Burlington Station Post Office No 3 (now Harvard Terminal), Steubenville Branch Post Office No 2 (now Jefferson Terminal), Franklin Branch Post Office No 1 (now Union Terminal), Ottawa Junction Branch Post Office No 4 (later North Side Union Railroad Station), Canandaigua & Kingston Roads Depot on West Market Street NW corner First National Bank Building lot corner Second National Bank building lot corner Third National Bank building lot corner Fourth National Bank building lot Corner First National Bank Building lots earliest map shows US Geological Survey Geographic Names Board Geographic Names Name: "Oxford", published December 10th 1835 . Oxford, Ohio was founded in 1792 by a group of Englishmen who were looking for a new land to settle. The town was named after the Oxfordshire village of that name where they first began their journey. They arrived on horseback and walked, and it wasn't until 1814 when the railroad came through that people could start moving into the town. The town grew rapidly and soon there were plenty of businesses, schools, and homes to call home. In 1915, Oxford became an incorporated city.
