The township was organized on November 3, 1802, when it was split from Trumbull County. In 1839, the village of Oxford was founded by two farmers, Drury and Pratt. It quickly became an important commercial center due to its location near the main road between Cleveland and Cincinnati. In 1867, the village merged with nearby Athens to form the larger city of Athens-Oxford. The city prospered until the 1970s when it began to decline because of heavy economic development in surrounding municipalities. In 1984, Oxford became an unincorporated community within Athens-Oxford City limits after voters passed a referendum asking for its annexation into Athens proper. Oxford's incorporation served as a symbol that local government had recognized its importance within Athenians and wanted to keep it healthy and vibrant despite their larger neighbor's efforts to downsize services and reduce competition. Today, Oxford remains one of the most diverse communities in Athens-Oxford City limits with Residents coming from all over central Ohio; West Virginia; Kentucky; Illinois; Indiana; Michigan; Canada; Mexico; Puerto Rico . Oxford, Ohio is a town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,859 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Flint metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Oxford was Nicholas Arnold who arrived in 1788 and built a log cabin on what is now the corner of Maple and Erie Streets. He named his settlement after Oxford University in England where he had studied law. The town grew quickly because of its strategic location at the junction of two major wagon roads: the Native American trade route between Detroit and Fort Wayne and the Cass Corridor linking Cincinnati with Akron and Toledo. In 1827, David Sargeant purchased land east of Elm Street to create an additional village site within the limits of Oxford Township; he renamed it Sargeantville. On November 12, 1830, voters approved a plat for Oxford Township specifying that all future villages within its boundaries be named after British Prime Ministers (eighth president), including Sir Robert Peel (1807-1828) and William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1865). In 1870, when State Highway 35 intersected US Route 62 near present day I-675 north of town, local farmers decided to rename their Routes "Angle" for convenience since angleworm or screwworms were common hitchhiking Illinois farm animals during those days.Route 66 followed whatever alignment SH 35 took until it bypassed Oxford Township entirely by routed northeast via Wabash Avenue into Defiance County in 1982 concurrent with I-675 becoming OH 95W as part of an urban expansion project following distant suburbs' growth around downtown Cleveland while still maintaining rural routing standards Another impetus for developingOxford came from World War II when General Motors began manufacturing automobiles there before moving production north to Midland Heights concentration camp on nearby Morenci Road soon after war ended . After soldiers left for home leave locals developed " Oxfords " for their new community which lasted until 1957 when state highway 375 was created just south of town along current US Route 422
