Oxford, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio. It was founded in 1817 by Captain John Smith and his wife Rachel, who named it after their home country Oxford, England. The population of Oxford was 751 at the 2000 census. The town was first settled on the east side of the Cuyahoga River by Irish immigrants who arrived during the early 1800s. According to local history, Captain John Smith purchased land in what is now Oxford from a group of Shawnee Indians for $225 in 1817. In 1824, Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest pulled up stakes and began angling for salmon in what is now Thames County; he recommended that eastern Ohioans move west to open space along the river bank where they could catch fish rather than rely on natural waterways to provide food and water supply. This prompted Smith and others to begin development around their new community- including building a courthouse, tavern, schoolhouse, storehouse and other buildings. In 1840, Oxford became part of Holmes County when it was organized following approval by Ohio General Assembly as part of an effort to increase agricultural production statewide amid difficult economic times caused by low prices for corn and other goods exported from Great Britain due to blockade efforts led by President James K. Polk Jr.). The county seat moved from Portsmouth (then located east of Holmesville) to Canton in 1848 following approval of a petition submitted by citizens asking for its relocation citing concern about rising crime rates within their community relative to nearby Toledo. Accordingly, with few exceptions- most notably Athens (the county seat until 1917)- all counties except Holmes were created via annexation or merger between different towns or villages over time while Oxford remained an unincorporated village until 1959 when it became part of the newly formed city of Canton under then Mayor Charles Ferguson inventorying its streetscape as one unit with similar architecture reflecting earlier Italianate style homes typical among many older white Anglo-Saxon residents near downtown Canton prior thereto). In 1951–1957 both mayors served terms overlapping two full terms each-one year later than then allowed under city charter provisions – Charles Ferguson resigned effective Dec 31 1957 upon becoming mayor pro tempore for Cleveland City Council vacancy resulting from election defeat thereof caused by incumbent Vincent Sheppard whom Ferguson opposed gubernatorial appointment as chief law enforcement officer required pursuant thereto). Upon resignation Sheppard was elected mayor pro tempore succeeding Ferguson who continued service until May 2 1963 when he succeeded fellow Democrat Edward Joffe as mayor designate concurrent with Cleveland's mayoral election that November resulting him being returned unopposed despite being term limited thereby ensuring continuation service beyond May 2 1963 notwithstanding passage thereafter of Cleveland Municipal Code section 3111 which provided: "No person shall be appointed Mayor Pro Tempore more than three consecutive years." Consequently Edward Joffe served out unexpired term ending May 2 1963 before being succeeded himself asmayor designate effective June 11963 thereafterbecomingCharlesFerguson II whocontinuedserviceuntil December 31 1966whenhe left office effective January 31967to succeed fellow DemocratLeonardBoltenasin office
Oxford, Ohio was founded in 1814 as a small village on the Scioto River. It grew rapidly and by 1828 had become a town. In 1838, it became an Athens County seat. In 1912, Oxford merged with the neighboring village of Greenville to form the town of Greenville-Oxford. The merger was challenged by residents of Greenville who wanted their own community separate from Oxford. A referendum in 1916 approved the merger but with no mention of Oxford.
