Oxford, Ohio is an unincorporated community in Youngstown County, Ohio, United States. It is located on the south bank of the Muskingum River at its confluence with the Ottawa River. The population was 1,059 as of the 2010 census. The area that now includes Oxford was first settled by Europeans in 1788 when General James Wilkinson and his troops were marching through what is now Youngstown to take part in the Northwest Indian War. Wilkinson's force found a location called Oxford Landing on the Ottawa River and began construction of a house there. In 1812, Colonel Edward Tiffin erected a small cabin near present-day Springfield Township to serve as headquarters for Tiffin's Regiment during the war with France. The town became known as Tiffinville after Colonel Tiffin's home. In 1825, Englishman John Smith built a cabin on land he had purchase from Thaddeus Stevens at what is now Zionsville. Smith named it Oxford because he believed that this place would become one of America's most important cities due to its strategic location between Cleveland and Cincinnati. In 1830, President Andrew Jackson awarded Smith an honorary degree from Princeton University and designated him president of Williams College in Cambridge, Massachusetts – only two months before his inauguration as president of the United States. When Jackson moved from Athens, Alabama to Washington D.C., he took Oxford along with him and made it one of his White House residences until his death in 1865. The post office at Oxford was established in 1828 and remained operational until 1913; during that time it served both Youngstown and Williamstown villages within Union Township (now Warren County). The first postmaster was Charles Hounshell Sr., who served for eight years before being replaced by Elijah Morse in 1849; Morse remains an honored resident today thanks to his donation(s) to Princeton University which has placed a plaque inside their beautiful new main building honoring him and Mr Hounshell A set back for local merchants came about when state legislation passed providing for mail service only within three counties:Youngstown/Warren/OSU; this leftOXFORD without any mail service other than horseback riders bringing packages upriver each day . Oxford, Ohio is a village in the U.S. state of Ohio and is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. Oxford Village was platted in 1824, and became a town in 1834. It was admitted to the Union as a city in 1907. It lost its charter as a city in 1954 but regained it in 1978. The current Mayor is Don Treadway. The first permanent settler in what would become Oxford Township were two men from Scranton, Pennsylvania who arrived on horseback on May 9, 1800, during the Adams–Onion Treaty negotiations that concluded the War of 1812 between Great Britain and United States forces. They named their land "Oxford." The first post office was established at Oxford on November 14, 1830 by David Williamson with James Horsley as Receiver General; both men served concurrently until February 2nd, 1836 when William Cranch took over both positions effective February 1st The township's first election took place on November 3rd, 1840 under new territorial laws which granted voting rights to all citizens regardless of race or color – an important step forward for black Americans who did not yet have full citizenship status at that time In 1848 voters ratified a white poll tax which funded public education through local boards of trustees rather than individual private schools New brick buildings for government offices were erected throughout the township during this time including an original courthouse which still stands today (renamed after President George Washington) A branch line from Cincinnati connected Oxford with Dayton via Princeton Junction Railroad and later built into downtown Dayton During this time there also grew quite some agriculture around Springfield with large outbuildings such as counties barns being built along with smaller residences In 1850-1851 John Aiken founded Aiken & Son Lumber Merchants near where Main Street now leads . This started what would be known as Pemberton County’s lumber industry This area includes much of Springfield todays center After years of growth many residents decided to move away from rural living into larger towns such as Dayton or Lima instead while others formed businesses within their communities like grocery stores
Oxford was founded in 1701 by a group of English farmers led by Sir George Oxenford. The town grew rapidly, and in 1800 it became the county seat of Columbiana County. It was renamed Oxford in 1853 after the University of Oxford, England's first university. The city's rapid growth led to problems with infrastructure and parking spaces, which were exacerbated by its location on the banks of the Saginaw River. In1974, Oxford merged with neighboring Hamilton Township to form a new municipality.
