Oxford is a small town in the Ohio Valley, twenty-five miles northeast of Cincinnati. The population was 1,343 at the 2010 census. The Oxford School District includes the town and eleven villages. The school district is one of fifteen in the Greater Cincinnati Public Schools system. The townsite was first settled in 1795 by Methodists from North Carolina and named for John Oxenford, an early settler in that region. In 1802, Colonel James A. Mellon purchased land adjacent to what is now Oxford and built a mill on the Scioto River. The community grew steadily until it reached its peak around 1830 when it had a population of 2,000 people. By 1840, however, Oxford had contracted tuberculosis and died due to the disease; its remaining residents were scattered through other settlements within Muskingum County until 1850 when they migrated to form what is now Dayton Township. In 1833–34 Major General Andrew Jackson visited Oxford on his way from Cairo to Knoxville to survey new lands west of Cincinnati along the Ohio River near Dayton. After spending several weeks visiting local farms and mills he ordered Commodore Robert Ewing to open up navigation on the river for shipping goods eastward from Pittsburgh via Cincinnati as part of his larger effort to improve trade between those cities and Kentucky/Ohio beyond what existed before European settlement (Ewing's Canals). As a result of this order some 400 businesses located along both sides of the river were founded including many that still operate today such as Winton Mill (founded 1856), Beechcroft Furniture Factory (1860), Oneida Brewing Company (1870) & Taylor Rubber Works (1910). The area around Oxford became known as "the Hawkeye Country" because so much hemp was grown hereabouts during this time period for textiles and shoes used by US soldiers during World War I However, since then production has dwindled overall although there are still several large factories closed down such as Upson Paper Company which operated from 1902-1970 According to United States Census Bureau data,1 percent of Cincy's population lived in Kingman Township north of downtown while 95 percent resided within Muskingum County proper where most heavy industry took place outside Clay City limits including coal mines at Piqua Court House ceased operations in 1912 but continue operations as battery producers at Nanticoke Mines contributing significantly directly or indirectly theretowise . That said though Clay City boundaries have expanded northward increasingly taking up more city blockspaceUpson Road off Charter Square gets pretty busy with people doing business out their homes thanks largely too nice neighbors who just don't want another urban center next door
