On December 12th 1814 during Battle Creek Campaign against Native American forces led by Chief Tecumseh and General George Armstrong Custer near Battle Creek National Battlefield near Painters Mill Road (now US-1), British troops under Lieutenant Colonel John Ontario engaged American cavalry commanded by Captain Nathan Hale over open ground just east ofpresent day Scranton Avenue NE adjacent to present day White Hall Road NW; while Hale managed to take two troopers prisoner; this event is often cited as markingthe end of hostilities between the United States Army and Native Americans until 1818 when another major battle occurred at Little Big Horn Mountain near Menasha Junction Kansas Territory on August 13th1818 which resulted in Santa Fe Expedition achieving independence from Mexico
