Oxford, Ohio is a small town in the state of Ohio, located on the Scioto River. The population was 4,025 at the 2010 census. Oxford is one of the oldest towns in Ohio and has been incorporated since 1803. The town was originally named Athens but changed to Oxford because of its location on the Oxford River. The first people to live in what is now Oxford were refugees from France during the French and Indian War. They built their first homes near where they now stand and started trading with other Native American tribes. By 1800, many English people had settled in what is now Oxford as part of efforts to settle land that had been claimed by both sides in the conflict. In 1802, a group of men from Athens founded a store called "The George" which served as an early center for trade and education withinOxford Township. In 1810, John Street was constructed between High Street and Court House Square to provide transportation between downtown Athens and Yale University on one side and west end of town on another side (now Elmwood Avenue). This street would later become known as Broadway after being renamed by King George Washington when he visited Athens in 1795. Although nothing remains of this structure today, it is still noted as one of the earliest Streetscape improvements made in Athens! In 1811-12, construction began on Simpson's Dam which became known as "the dam". The dam formed a large reservoir that helped increase water availability for agriculture while also providingpower for local mills. The dam also provided entertainment opportunities for locals including concerts and dance performances during summer months when riverboats cruised downstream looking for fish! Athens saw rapid growth throughout much of the 19th century due to new technology discoveries such as railways and automobiles which brought jobs into town along with increased traffic volumes! Many businesses closed or moved out due to competition from larger towns such as Cleveland or Dayton across the state line! However, despite these challenges, Despite heavy discounting by local merchants during World War I due to rationing activities within government control following war mobilization efforts - quickly increasing prices caused many Athenians to return home once hostilities ended! In 1925-1926 - construction began on Muskegon Heights Drive - becoming one of America’s first high-speed Interstate highways!. After more than $2 million dollars worth of engineering , design & integration work was completed - there never before had this kindof highway been built within such a short distance & through such an unincorporated area !! Today it continues To be very important artery connecting East Canton with downtown OHIO !! It truly demonstrates how far we have come over these past 100 years !!
