The city was founded by English colonists in 1796 as an agricultural community on a tract of land that had been granted by General George Washington to John Trimble. In 1813, Oxford became a town when it merged with neighboring Trimble Township. A new courthouse and jail were built in 1827 and 1828 respectively; both are still standing today. In 1870, the railroad reached Oxford from Dayton and made it an important transportation hub. The arrival of automobiles led to rapid growth in the city during the 1920s and 1930s; by 1950,Oxford had become one of Dayton's largest cities.
