The history of both towns begins with settlers who arrived in northeast Ohio during the mid-19th century. Many of these men were attracted to what they saw as an abundant natural resources and virgin land near Cincinnati. After traveling through Indiana and Michigan Territory they reached northeast Ohio in late 1847. They camped out until winter before setting up shop around what is now Portsmouth (then Ashland) on Sandusky Bayou. In December 1848, four young men - John Smeaton, James Purdy, George Stephenson and Nicholas Meyer - founded Portsmouth as a trading post on West SideBayou (now Kirtland Creek). At first it was simply called Portsmouth but soon began serving as a stop alongthe overland Santa Fe Trail which linked California with Texas and Mexico City. In 1850/51 three more brothers - Samuel Morse, Edward Hutton and Franklin Bachell - joined forces with Smeaton at Portsmouth to form the ohios oldest bus company known today as American Bus Lines In 1853 two more pioneer families also arrived in northeast Ohio: The Wickershams from Massachusetts broughtinka farmsteading skills while also engaging in fur trade; and Peter Cooper from Pennsylvania founded Hyperion Mills which manufactured millinery including wedding dresses for wealthy women across eastern North America
