Norwood, Ohio is a small town located in the Northwest corner of Ohio, about 20 miles south of Cincinnati. The population was 3,611 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1812 by General Israel Putnam and his wife Deborah Putnam. It became a part of Hamilton County in 1824. In 1840, Norwood had a population of 1,908 people and it became a village in 1872. The village merged with neighboring Stroudsburg on November 1st, 1912 to form Norwood Township which still exists today as an unincorporated community within Hamilton County. Norwood's history begins with its location on the border of two states; one that was home to Native Americans and another that was soon after becoming Americanized and supporting European settlers. The area that Norwood now occupies has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years according to archaeological evidence uncovered during construction projects conducted throughout the town’s history. In 1812, General Israel Putnam purchased 5 acres (20 hectares) of land along the Scioto River east of present day Norwood from the Shawnee Indians for $1USD per acre ($4/$10 worth at that time). This purchase marked the beginning of what would become NorWOOD – an agricultural community focused on raising crops and livestock for export to Europe. From this location,General Putnam oversaw some of America’s earliest commercial interactions with Europeans through trade relationships and cultural exchangers such as his son-in-law John Marshall who served as Ulysses S Grant’s Indian agent during their administrations respectively. Although originally intended as a transient stopover on his journey across central Ohio “to open up new country[s] for Settlement[],” Marshall ultimately arrived in NORWOOD to stay until he could sell back his holdings to General Putnam followingHis death in 1825 at age 73 years old (−$2M at current market value). By 1830 handpicked men from both local farmers and other frontier settlements had arrived in NORWOOD seeking access to rich farmland surrounding Scioto Valley stretching all the way north into Canada; initially targeting areas such as Steubenville and Canandaigua but later expanding beyond these boundaries into parts now known as Columbiana County including Athens Heights (now Orchard), Mount Lebanon (nowHollywood Hills), Springdale (now Cleveland Heights), Valparaiso (formerly Whitehall), Hilliard (now Medina) and much more.. Although agriculture remained important throughout most early decades due largely toeasily accessible water resources which sustained most early pioneers,. With advances in transportation technologies during 19th century America; goods began moving westward faster than ever before passenger trains reached major cities like Cincinnati via road or river crossings making farming less necessary/possible while also providing easy access both ways for settlers looking for land outside their original borders…..With railroads cameSTDICALIZATION! A whole new generation were brought up knowing how TO WORK THE WESTERN HANDLING COMPANY LINES & HOW TO GET THEIR LAND TO THEM SO THEY COULD START FARMING….NORWOOD DECIDED IT WAS TIME FOR ITS OWN SCHOOL SYSTEM & CREATED A SCHOOL DISTRICT THAT INCLUDED ALL OF HAMILTON COUNTY..NORWORD EARNED ITS FIRST BONUS PAYMENT FROM THE STATE OF OHIO FOR MAKING GOOD ON OUR PAST DUTIES AS A SCHOOL district!……..although there [were] teenage girls attending school IN NORWOOD thru out Hamilton county true enough…..the first STEAM ROOMS WERE BUILT IN NORWOOD BY ISAAC MORTON (& HIS FAMILY) IN 1925……..norwoods landmark high school valedictorian Isaac Morton built "The Morton School" which students can still visit today……………one reason why norwood is so well known today is because not many places around here have gone through all this trouble & expense To preservation………………norwoods economy depends heavily upon tourism although there are several businesses involved too…………….norwoods Volunteer Fire Department has been active since 1916
