Norwood is a city in Highland County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,651 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest of the five cities in Highland County and is located about 12 miles (19 km) west of Cleveland on State Route 238. Norwood was platted in 1836 by James Prentice and his brother-in-law Nathaniel Bedford. Norwood is located on the southern edge of what was then known as the "Prentice Reservation" which lay east of present day Cleveland. At its peak in 1871, Norwood had a population of 10,000 people and three churches: First Baptist Church (founded 1836), Methodist Episcopal Church (1861), and Presbyterian Church (1876). In 1902 it became part of the newly formed city of Cleveland. The first white settler in Norwood was Amos Sibley in 1797. He homesteaded land near modern day Norwood village on what is now State Route 238. His heirs sold their holdings to Captain John Henshawe in 1830 for $2 per acre ($54 total). Captain Henshawe farmed until 1834 when he decided to move his family to Cleveland because of an increase in prices for goods imported from Europe due to political unrest there. By 1840, Henshawe had acquired over 1,000 acres (4 km²) along with two mills owned by one Peter Auld and others near present day Orchard Hills Drive and Euclid Avenue - these were all part of what later became Norwood Village. A survey made by Colonel John Cephus during February–March 1800 showed that there were 5 families living within one hundred rods or twenty-five miles easternward [of] this place; they being Daniel Boone's party who had removed thence from Kentucky some time before[ ]. A few additional families lived upon public lands hereabouts but they have since disappeared without leaving any progeny behind; no mention has been made either of them or their descendants…It appears that up till quite lately not a single white person resided within one mile square around this spot….We learn from our own experience that Indians are very numerous hereabouts among us colored people though generally we do not molest them nor take offence at their visits’—Captain John Henshawe assessed taxes for area surveyed February 1800 Norworod Township formed December 9th,1837 outgrowing parts 2nd & 3rd wards which were Aliquippa & Scioto townships . Norwood, Ohio is a small town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by three brothers in 1817 as a trading post on the Great Lakes and served as a transportation center for goods transported to and from other areas of the country. The Norwood Post Office was established in 1827 and operated until it was discontinued in 1892. Norwood became a community after being incorporated in 1892. Its first president was William Ladd. The town's original streets were named for members of the local family: Joseph Norwood (father), John Norwood (brothers), and Ebenezer Norwood (uncle). In 1903, an act of the Ohio General Assembly designated Norwood as one of four towns located along Lake Erie that would receive assistance with developing their landholdings for educational purposes. This designation lasted until 1959 when all but one of these towns were dissolved into larger municipalities within Cleveland County; nor wood continued to be assigned assistance under this program until its termination in 1996. Norwood has had several notable residents over time: George Washington Carver, who lived there during his childhood; James Waring Sr., who ran the largest store in town during World War II; basketball Hall-of-Famer Isiah Thomas; and entrepreneur Bernie Madoff. After years of controversy surrounding plans by utility companies to install turbines on residential properties near its borders - primarily due to concerns about noise created by those turbines - residents voted 3-2 against those plans at an election held on November 3rd 2013.
