Norwood is a town in the Butler County, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Toledo metropolitan area. The Norwood School District serves the town. Norwood was platted in 1827 by businessman and landowner Job Smith. The first settler in what is now Norwood was Jacob Decker who arrived about 1800. In 1851, John Mayson bought 640 acres (2 km²) of land from Smith for $1,000 cash. He named it "Norwold". According to one source, Mayson had been inspired to name his property after his home town of Norwich, England where he grew up and where he had family roots dating back to 1637. In 1870, Joshua Haines purchased 1/4 mile (0.6 km²) of east-west road from Mayson which became known as Main Street later that year. In 1871 Captain John Witherspoon donated 3 rods (24 feet 2 inches or 7 meters), or 4 acres (14 hectares), of unsurveyed land on Center Road south of present day Norwood are now located within the boundaries of Norwood Township when it was organized as a township in 1881 Milton Eisenhower donated an additional rod (36 feet 6 inches or 11 meters) on Center Road north of present day Norwood to form Park Drive which served as the townsite boundary until 1907 when Township limits were extended into Park Township beyond that point Eisenhower's donation also included an 8-foot wide (.25 m deep) ditch and bank along Main Street between today's First Avenue and Second Avenue across from today's Petticoat Lane . This parcel forms what is now center street . A schoolhouse - likely built soon after Eisenhower made his donation - can be seen on this site . . . Today only one house remains standing on this stretch of main street near current day Petticoat Lane: the old Patton house The first store in what is now Norwood opened its doors in October 1830 by entrepreneur Samuel Snively with a wagonload of goods brought overland by boat from Lancaster County.. Early residents were mostly farmers with some farmhands coming to work during harvest time.. By 1840 there were 5 stores operating in town with most being run by Germans.. Most businesses closed around 1860 due to lack of customers or competition from new arrivals such as Lancashire based grocery store chain Cheever & Co.. In 1863 local resident George Buss moved his foundry and furnace business downMain Street into current day Unity Plaza for protection against Native Americans raiding His place .. Continued fighting led to := US troops == moving into town early 1865 .. Business owners reorganized themselves under two committees called "Citizens' Committee" controlled by Mayor Whitehead who ran things through a board .. BUSINESSES RESTORED BY WAR TIME NAVY IN 1967 NORWOOD PHASE II began with townspeople voting to allow military housing inside their homes w/ few restrictions still remaining

Manufacturing production peaked at 5017 jobs in 2000 but has declined somewhat since then; recent growth has come from service Sector jobs (such as health care) and new construction projects (such as a shopping mall).
