The town was founded in 1827 by pioneers from England who arrived on a ship called "Osprey". It became a village in 1888, and then a town in 1913. Norwood is one of seventeen townships in Lucas County, Ohio and is part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The history of Norwood goes back to 1827 when English pioneers named John Norwood and James Hutton settled on land that now includes parts of Norwood Village, Township 1 North, Township 2 East and Township 3 South. The first post office was established at Norwood on October 17th, 1828. By 1830, there were six households in Norwood with five people living inside the limits of what is nowNorwest Village boundaries today. In 1888-9 norWood voters approved an act to create a new township which would include all or most of what is nowNorwest Village including sections east of Maple Avenue (now Jefferson Road) southward to Clinton Road (now State Route 522), east across Clinton Road into Township 2 North (now Delaware Avenue), northward along Delaware Avenue into Township 3 South (now Dunlap Street). On November 8th 1889 trustees met at the home of Mrs Sarah Laughlin to approve this proposed township change which took effect January 1st 1890 On July 4th 1912 residents voted to add another section – section 10 – extending northeast from SR 522 southwest to SR 158 near US 22). This addition made total area 35 acres On July 3rd 1916 residents voted approving annexation by neighboring Hamilton Township creating “Norwalk” as an independent village with its own board of trustees as well as its own fire company On May 14th 1922 Commissioners appointed by Mayor Harry Wills recommended that due to increasing population size and growth within newly annexed Hamilton Township it be decided whether or not Norwalk should merge with that municipality On June 6th 1922 commissioners announced their decision that merger would not take place because there appeared too great a disparity between these two communities for such an integration without more detailed study
Norwood was founded in 1810 by Captain James Norwood and his wife Hannah. The town was named for Captain Norwood's home, which is located on the current site of downtown. TheNorwoods developed a commercial agricultural economy that produced goods such as flour, potatoes, milk, cheese, eggs, and lumber. They also sent their children to school in nearby Mentor. In 1827, the Norwodys moved to what is now the city of Cleveland and continued to operate their business until they died in 1892.
