Norwood was laid out in 1814 by Peter Cooper. It became a town in 1836 and was named for Norwood, England. The population of Norwood grew to about 1,500 in 1850, and it became the county seat of Holmes County in 1857. In 1912, the United States Congress designated Norwood as the site of the new national capital, but because Ohio had no death penalty at that time, the city refused to move. In 1930, Norwood became an incorporated city with a mayor-council government. The city was renamed Columbus after the U.S. capital in 1934 and remains so today.
Norwood was once a thriving community and home to many people. The area was first settled by the Norwood community in 1814, and grew rapidly thereafter. In 1831, the town was merged with Price Township, becoming one of the largest towns in Ohio. The population of Norwood increased significantly during its early years, reaching over 1,000 residents by 1840. However, this growth came at a cost; as the town quickly became more commercialized and developed less cultural significance, it began to decline in popularity among its residents. By 1850, Norwood had shrunk to just over 100 people and lost much of its former importance as a center of commerce and culture. However, it continued to exist as an agricultural township until 1923 when it became part of Price Township again.
