Norwood is a small town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,564 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Norwood was founded in 1820 by Revolutionary War veteran George Washington Norwood and his wife Hannah. The Norwoods were pioneers in what is now Stark County and built a log cabin on the banks of the Cuyahoga River. From this cabin, they started a small farmstead that prospered for many years until it was destroyed by a fire in 1868. In 1898, George Washington Norwood II donated land to build an elementary school in Norwood. It was dedicated on October 4th, 1898. In 1906, another gift from George Washington Norwood II allowed for the construction of a high school which became known as Baldwin-Macon High School (now Cleveland State University). In 1938, Baldwin-Macon High School became home to the first girl's college in Ohio when Seneca College moved to Baldwin-Macon from Toledo Township.. In 1951, Baldwin-Macon High School became home to Stockbridge Technical Institute which served as the community's first technical college and remains one of today’s most important educational institutions in Norwood today! The following year saw significant changes when Cleveland State University moved into its current building on Euclid Avenue near Park Boulevard! Norwood, Ohio is a small town in the southwestern corner of Ohio, United States. The community was founded in 1805 by James Norwood and his wife, Cynthia. It is located on the east bank of the Scioto River. The Norwoods were one of the early settlers in what would become Dayton, Ohio. In 1814, James Norwood became a justice of the peace in that city and served until his death in 1825. His son John Norwood continued to serve as an officer with distinction during this time. In 1824, JohnNorwood married Sarah Greenough and they had two children before divorcing in 1829. SarahGreenough moved to Cincinnati where she died in 1865. Their daughter Abby joined them there after her mother's death and later took their surname NorWOODs when she married another local man – Samuel Woodward Sr., also a justice of the peace – but they divorced again in 1880. Samuel Woodward Jr., who had been born into slavery near Mansfield, Kentucky, moved to Norwood around 1830 and worked as a laborer before switching to farming at some point during his lifetime. He became an owner/operator of a farmstead by 1840 and began to subdivide it into lots for sale later that same year; he also built a gristmill on the riverbank which he operated until 1863 when it was destroyed by fire. Whenverend Baptiste Lalonde visited Dayton from Montreal during its construction period (1847-48) he noted that "a great many people are engaged about mills [in] Dayton", adding that "the Indians have all but discontinued chipping away at these structures" because "[t]hey can do better without us". According to local historian Hilda Jepsen Wright: "The mills [were] important because they produced flour for breadmaking; cloth for household use; lumber for building; soap products such as candles and kerosene lamps; drugs such as laudanum and morphine; eggs for poultry feed" In 1850–51 Nathalie Moynihan traveled through central Ohio visiting various towns including Dayton on her way home from living with her father-in-law Drury Hartselius at High Point Manor near Xenia while attending college there under Professor Alexander Graham Bell's sponsorship.(see High Point Manor). She recorded extensively about Indian trails leading southward from Mansfield via Sycamore Township north of Findlay toward Miamisburg(Mansfield County), notingespecially several unusual waterfalls called Canoe Falls duelling against each other near Canoa (now part of Powellsburg). One observer described these falls thus: "A short distance below Arete Spring nestles Canoe Falls—a deep blue stream giving its name to this place—the falls drop hundred feet or more over smooth bottomed rocks which ripple beneath their weight like waves upon an abyss." Norwood was founded in 1793 by Nicholas Norwood and his wife, Deborah. The town was named after the fertile farmstead on which it was located. The Norwoods were a Quaker family from Bucks County, Pennsylvania. After arriving in Ohio, the Norwoods began land speculation and developed what is now Norwood into a thriving agricultural community. In 1812, Nicholas Norwood donated an acre of land to the Township of Harrison for use as a public school district. The township name changed to Harrison Township in 1868 when the village of Harrison was incorporated.
