In 1814, John Wyeth purchased 1/5th of an acre (0.24 ha) in what is now downtown Norwalk from Samuel Adams for $800; he named it Wyeth Place after himself and donated it to The village company as a gift to promote industry in central Ohio. By 1830, over 50 businesses had been organized under Wyeth's auspices: six tanneries - five slaughterhouses - four distilleries - two breweries - one cigar factory - one printing shop - three wagon manufactories and twenty-one hogsheads (four hundred gallons) of spirits per day were being produced there by some 2200 workers using 350 horses working sixteen hours per day seven days a week during wagonsolo production Seasonal harvests brought production up to 400 hogsheads per day by 1840 when properties included 5 blocks square containing 40 buildings producing 1800 bushels of corn annually; lumbering also taking place here soon after that with 1000 feet (300 m) long logs being cut on both sides then transported downriver to local mills where they would be turned into fence posts or plank fences or built into houses beginning around 1850 suburban development started encroaching rapidly on agricultural resources leading to increased competition among entrepreneurs more focused on developing new markets outside their original communities One such business owner later called "The Wagonman" because his products moved quickly from wagon transportation through town centers throughout Ohio reaching new consumers all across Great Lakes region Norwalk became an incorporated town in 1851 when most of its boundaries were redrawn following settlement by other towns within Lucas County as part of efforts to create a contiguous community with centralized government viewable from downtown Norwalk.
