Norwalk, Ohio is a town in Montgomery County, Ohio, United States. The population was 11,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Kettering Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Norwalk rifle range opened in 1892 and closed in 1961. The Norwalk Pistol Club was founded in 1895 and still exists today as a non-profit organization. The first pistol match held in Norwalk was on November 3rd, 1895 between the Norwalk Rifle Range and the Dayton Pistol Club. In 1898, when the Ohio legislature passed an act authorizing state police to confiscate firearms from persons not authorized to possess them, Norwalk rifles were among those seized by state troopers at gunpoint. According to one source, "Norwalk's rifle range had been open for over 100 years before state law caught up with it." In 1911, the city of Dayton purchased rights to the range from the original owners and reopened it as its own pistol club complex known as “The Gun Emporium” which included a three-story firing gallery with a seating capacity for 350 people; an indoor track;an outdoor shooting gallery measuring ;a gymnasium;and numerous other amenities for shooters of all levels including two ranges: one for men only (the John Fenton Range) and one open to women (the Alice Bogan Range). In 1932 local farmers banded together to purchase 12 acres adjacent to The Gun Emporium complex used for agricultural purposes which became known as “The Farm Park” later renamed “Norwalk Municipal Center Park” after town annexation into Dayton in 1938. Today this issue property remains undeveloped off US 273 east of I-75 near exit 191A

It is part of the Cleveland-Warren-Canton, Cuyahoga County, Ohio metropolitan area and is bordered by Lake Erie to the south and east, and Lake Ontario to the north. The racial makeup of Norwalk as of 2000 was 96% White and 2% Black. As of 2010 there were 11 high schools in Norwalk with over 1,000 students enrolled; four are located in Downtown Norwalk - Central High School (1002 E Broad St), Mount Carmel Catholic High School (1007 Euclid Ave), Oakland Tech High School (10300 Woodward Ave) and Robinson Middle School (1205 N Maple Rd). In addition, nine community colleges serve Norwalk - Cleveland State University (formerly Cleveland Metropolitan Community College), Kent State University-Main Campus (1400 East Mason Rd.), Lorain Valley Community College (700 Euclid Ave.), Miami University trustees campus/campus on Glendale Heights Road/South Main Street(1120 W Tremont Avenue), Trotter Technical Institute-Norwalk Campus(8500 S Troy Rd.), Youngstown State University Northeast Campus(4010 Walnut St.) In 1842 an act providing for land purchases within present day Cuyahoga County was passed by Congress; these purchases followed a process known as "the Donation Act". The donation act created 10 townships within present day Cuyahoga County - seven west of downtown Cleveland, two northeast of that city along Ironton Road (), one east off Superior Avenue () and one north off Canfield Avenue (). The townships were named after members of Parliament who had contributed land to arrive at a total amount desired for purchase (). These ten townships would later become part of what is today Norwalk Township (), being organized on July 1st 1847 (). The first settler in what is now Norwalk was Peter Krieger from Steubenville, Ohio who arrived on July 4th 1847 (). He built his home on what is now Elmwood Drive near Pioneer Square. There are several early pioneers buried there including John Stephenson (), John Shaffer (), Abraham Goodrich () and Solomon Snyder (). One early post office operated in Townshend until it was discontinued on October 16th 1850 due to lack of mail service from Toledo (). After creating eight more townships throughout central review township between 1870-1915 some residents began moving out into other areas in search for new homes or opportunities(). Among these people were James Pemberton () who bought property just outside present day Elyria (); George Robertson () settled nearpresent day Mayfield Heights (); Myron Overstreet () founded Oak Lawn Village which became an affluent community full of single family homes (); David Hartsock established Grosse Pointe Woods (); Augustus Kelley founded Royal Oak ; among those moving away were Job Griffin (), Alfred Sloan (), Isaac Warner ()); all but Job Griffin eventually moved back to their original properties once improved transportation became available. Norway also experienced rapid growth during this time with many small businesses opening up throughout its citizens (). This growth can be seen most clearly around 1900 when norwegian immigrants began arriving en masse seeking work opportunity in America (). Many Norwegian businesses opened up such as Jens Olsen's grocery store (), Hans Ove Lange's bakery() and Ole Jacobsen's lumberyard(). Norwich quickly became known as "America's Norway" due to this influx Ofnewfound economic prosperity while also becoming home to numerous churches such as Our Lady Helping Hand Parish Cathedral (), Christ Church Cathedral ()) erected between 1902-1906 by Danish Immigrants Cornelius Ziegfeldt(), Rudolph Nyborg()and Ole Kirk Christiansen(). Additionally important during this time period were Norwegian architects such as Odd Reidar Humlenstein(), Harald Romerad()and Frits Thomsen(). With increased demand for workers following World War IINorwich found itselfaining increasing sums from taxation levied upon its citizens through government agencies like Social Security Administration ())and Veterans Affairs Administration ($)]. Consequently much needed housing projects such as Riverside Gardens development sprang up across town towards South Shore Boulevard which would soon become one OFnorwich'S most desired neighborhoods []]. Other successful projects during this era include Forks Landing subdivision developed between 1949-1951 by Drury quarterback Bill Stanback(); Apple Tree Estates development completed between 1957-1959 by Homer Hickman(); Park View Manor development completed between 1966-1968 by developer Clifford Roberts (); Heritage Inn & Suites project opened in 2002 adjacentto South Shore Boulevard]]. From 1950 until 1989 only white residents could vote without contributing anything towards local coffers []; however starting January 1st 1989 all residents regardless race or ethnicity can vote [].Following yearsof investmentNorwich has again regainedmuch needed mainstream attention []]: In 2007 they won their first national award at the prestigious Envision Awards[]], garnering second place behind Cincinnati[]]. The origins of muzzleloaders date back more than two hundred years; they originated in Holland during the Eighty Years' War (1688-1714). Muzzleloader rifles were designed primarily as infantry weapons but soon became popular among cavalry and artillery units as well as shotgunners and other sporting clayshooters who could not use heavier firearmsights at close range due to their bulky design or obstruction by friendly troops.Muzzleloading pistols had first been developed in 17th century France but did not enter common use until after the American Revolution when large numbers of British soldiers came ashore carrying heavy muskets while trying to repel colonial forces ashore on Long Island in 1674-75 (Watts 1999). It was during this period that John Brown managed to arm some boys from Kentucky with small pistols fitted with bayonets before he was Killed at Harpers Ferry (Goodwin 2003).The first successful mass production rifle using breech loading ammunition was made by George Armstrong Custer at his Indian Treaty Fort Reno arsenal near Reno Nevada on October 20th 1876 (Kramer 1986). This firearm was christened "Custer Rifle" after General George Armstrong Custer who personally purchased it from Mr . Norwalk, Ohio was founded in 1795 by Captain John Norwalk and his wife Judith. The town was named after the Norwalk River, which ran through it. The first store in the town opened in 1797. By 1825, the population of Norwalk had reached 1,500 people. In 1851, Norwalk became a city. In 1903, the city annexed neighboring towns of Beech Grove and Blacklawn to form a new city Limits district. As a result of this annexation, Norwalk became one of seventeen cities in Ohio that were incorporated as cities during the process known as "The Great Merger." In 1933, Mayor George H. Brown proposed that all of the businesses within limits of Norris Park be closed and moved to what is now downtown Norris Park for use as an open-air marketplace with housing available for customers on site. This proposal was successful and continues to be used today as part of Norris Park's commercial district. Norwich also has significant historical significance due to its role in both American Revolutionary War efforts and World War II service members who lived and worked there during those times. For example, Norwich residents John Adams (1775-1837) and Samuel Morse (1792-1847) played important roles in building America's first telegraph network from their home town into a global player during the Revolutionary War; later they built America's first submarine cable system while living in Norwich Beachport after their submarine USS Mohawk collided with another boat off Long Island Sound on November 25th 1899 killing five sailors including Adams). Additionally, Norwich residents Wm Henson (1902-1981), Dick Cheney (1953-) serving as Vice President under President Gerald Ford until 1981 when he succeeded Roger Ailes as Chairman of the Republican National Committee based out of Washington D.C., Edwin Meese III (1982-) Attorney General for Presidents Reagan & Bush I also grew up here before moving away to become very prominent political figures outside Ohio
Norwalk was founded in 1824 as a small village on the west bank of the Maumee River. The village grew rapidly, and by 1853 it had become a full-fledged town. In that year, Norwalk became the first community in Ohio to be organized as a county seat. It remained so for several years, until it was moved to Toledo in 1857.
