The Norwalk Rifle and Pistol Club, organized in 1892, was the first rifle and pistol club in Norwalk. The club met at the old post office on State Street. In 1895, the Norwalk Rifle and Pistol Club purchased a house at 501 W. Market Street which they used as their clubhouse until 1903 when they moved to their present location on Elm Drive. The Norwalk Rifle and Pistol Club is one of the oldest rifle and pistol clubs in Ohio. It was founded on October 1, 1892 by members of the village of Norwalk in Warren County. The initial meeting was held at the old post office on State Street. At that time, there were only six residents inNorwalk- four men and two women- all of whom belonged to other organizations such as the Masonic Lodge No. 5 or local churches). The first president of the club was George Prentice (1869-1952). He served for three terms from 1893 to 1897; during his term, he helped organize a rifle range which became an important part of community life. The next president was William Sperling (1898-1914). During his term, club membership increased from 25 to 50 due to improvements made at their new home on Elm Drive. It was under Mr. Sperling’s guidance that the Norwalk Rifle & Pistol Club began its association with IPSC World Cup competitions in 1900 where it placed second behind Columbus Brass Band Society . From 1901 through 1904 we also won several group games against other clubs from central Ohio including Athens American Legion (), Dayton Arsenal (), Lawrenceburg Gunnery School ()etc etc.). Mr Sperling retired after serving as President for six years (1925-1929) however he left behind a fine legacy both as President/Champion & Manager/Builder/Member – A good example being building their current clubhouse which still stands today (he donated it free of charge!). His successor Dr John Fenton took over successfully until 1945 when Mr Harry Ladd came into office who continued until 1949 when Mrs Jane Ladd took over again who continued until 1953 when Rev John Hargrave finally got control! After Mrs Jane’s death in 1957 Rev Hargrave continued for another five years before stepping down effective January 1st 1959 because he had outlived his usefulness! After Rev Hargrave’s departure there followed a period of interim management with various committee chairmanships before finally taking over full time by appointment from then until 1969 when Ms Grace Snyder became President! Through her long tenure she continue making enhancements both inside & outside our current facility including construction of our pool area (& additional parking), addition of stateoftheart equipment (& Trophy Room), expanding our social activities beamuging numerous sports events (.50 caliber pistols only) Today we arecontinuing what we have started - providing quality NRA firearms training for everyone interested regardless if they are seasoned shooters or just starting out !!
