Norton, Ohio is a census-designated place inWarren County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,546 at the 2010 census. Norton is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton metropolitan area. It lies east of the city of Akron and west of the city of Canton. The name "Norton" comes from two accounts: one from 1795 by Anthony Wayne and another from 1814 by Lewis Cass as part of a dispute over land that had been ceded to them by the Shawnee Indians. The town was named for John Norton, an American Revolutionary officer who fought with George Washington in the Battle of Bunker Hill during the American Revolution. According to local legend, when General Christopher Gist's brigade arrived at Norton on July 4th, 1794, they found only a single rifle left in town after all other equipment had been destroyed at Battle of Fallen Timbers three days earlier on July 3rd. Gist ordered his men to encamp nearwhere he would live until relieved by British reinforcements later that day; however, when night fell his troops discovered there were no tents or fires anywhere near where they should have been located so they abandoned their positions and returned home without accomplishing their mission. To commemorate this event local residents built a small gazebo known as Gist's tower which still stands today next to Route 22 just outside town limits. In 1814 Anthony Wayne traveled downriver through what is now Norton and encountered Native Americans while exploring the area for possible trade routes beyond present-day Akron/Canton Township boundaries (the first white man ever to do so). He called out "Norton!" but no one answered back so he continued traveling until he came across some Indian children playing nearby; then he took notice of several large trees off in a field about four miles south along US 9 (then known as State Road 7) that may have been used as trading posts between colonists and natives during this time period - too far away for anyone but Native Americans to see him so he approached cautiously before entering an ambush set up by 20 warrior chief’s children who were waiting for him! After dodging arrows while running through tall grasses into thickets behind friendly trees Randolph Tilton managed eventually to return home empty handed with $1 worthof goods! Just like that - history was made! After America gained independence from Great Britain in 1776, settlers began moving into eastern Warren County including Nortonsville (founded1792), Dayton (1802), Xenia (1812), Painesville Heights (1821), Bellefontaine (1827), Oxford Hills(1829), Centerville Heights(1831) Windsor Heights(1835). These settlements grew rapidly because new land became available: much needed timber became available along transportation routes such as US 221 leading north from Akron towards Cincinnati; also numerous clay mines were developed throughout this time frame yielding valuable minerals such as copper and lead which supported many early industries including shipbuilding and manufacturing. In 1830 Nortonsville incorporated under state law becoming one of sixteen townships within Warren County created following annexation ratified by state legislature on December 12th 1830 . By 1840 most residents had moved away excepting a few families who remained clustered around main downtown streets enjoying views over Lake Erie & its islands while continuing their agricultural activities including raising chickens & pigs etc., sometimes using neighbor’s barns for shelter during severe weather conditions.. When railroads were constructed connecting Cleveland & Cincinnati via Sanduskyton starting in 1868 many people decided it was time to move again including those living near downtown areas where 2 blocks east stood “The White House” now occupied by IHOP food chain restaurant .. Many millers left their lands producing flour here into the 20th century selling beans etc., until mostly discontinued due mainly to lack of water resources these days making restoration necessary.. In 1918 northeastern Ohio became territory controlled by America First Committee following passage ot resolution proclaiming November 8th 1918 "National Redeemed Day" honoring all lost soldiers during World War 1 regardless race or color .. This action helped spark development efforts leading up finallyto establishmentin1924of City Of Norton Police Department !! Norton, Ohio is a small town in thewest section of the U.S., located about 35 miles (55 km) north of Cleveland and 25 miles (40 km) east of Akron. At the time of its incorporation as a township in 1827, Norton was one of the most remote areas in northern Ohio. The town grew rapidly during the mid-19th century due to its strategic location on both banks of the Little Cuyahoga River, close to other villages and towns along that river's course. By 1870, Norton had reached an estimated population of 1,200 people. However, by 1900 it had shrunk to less than 100 people due largely to rise in manufacturing activity throughout northeast Ohio and new waves of immigrants from Poland and Russia. In recent years, however, growth has returned as Norton celebrates its 375th anniversary this year. The town's namesake is John Norton, who donated land for a courthouse and school in 1827. After purchasing land at what is now downtown Norton from his brother-in-law Benjamin Fenton for $5 per acre (2 hectares), John set up shop farming produce and raising livestock near what is now East Market Street. He may have been inspired by nearby Newark, Delaware – which he called "the old court house" – which had replaced an earlier courthouse destroyed by fire in 1792. Although there are no records indicating that John ever met British Prime Minister William Pitt or any other famous figures during his lifetime, he likely helped develop nortontown's infrastructure including a first water supply system (from an Underground Railroad route deep into central Ohio) and streets named after important local officials such as Justice Joseph Story and Sheriff James Kapp (already mentioned). Nonetheless, even if John never set foot inside Nortontown himself – let alone traveled down Memory Lane via street name or historical marker – his donation would still exert significant influence on today's community center complex situated just east of downtown on State Road 421/422/423A; west side yards adjoining state roads 26 & 27B; and adjacent private property between those roads with access only through driveways leading directly to residences . . . With more than two centuries worth of history associated with it within Nortontown proper alone – dating back before 1827 when it became Township #1 - some 9 acres (.30 ha) designated within current boundaries were added to northeastern Ohio’s total land area under townshiphood boundary changes resulting from annexation various times over ensuing decades culminating with present day Nortontown Borough status effective January 1st 1999 It should be noted that initially all but 1/4 mile (.25 km) south was part of neighboring Wickliffe Township where pioneer families also lived until territory was transferred en masse from Wickliffe Township following riots preceding American Civil War Notable civic leaders who resided or worked in Norton include: Rev..
