Norton is a city in and the county seat of Noble County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,693 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–KyOTO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded by John Norton in 1831 as a stop on the Underground Railroad. Norton's parents were from England and his father had fled to America when they were young. They first settled in what is now Fillmore Township but soon moved to what is now Nortonville in order to escape religious persecution there. In 1836, John Norton donated land to make up for a share of the $1,500 he received from General James Knox that had been used to purchase land for Fort Recovery in Ohio during the pro-slavery American Revolution. In 1855, John Norton donated another piece of land to make up for an error in his initial donation which had given away too much land east of Toledo instead of west as intended. This donation formed part of Medina Park which surrounds downtown today. The official name given to the park until 1907 was "John Norton Lake". A new name, "Norton Park", was chosen after John Norton's death in 1901 and became permanent with his bequest. In 1909, Dover High School opened within walking distance of downtown; this marked the first time public education had been available inside municipal boundaries since before Ohio statehood (1801). In 1925, Nortons merged with nearby Centerville and became one municipality again under the name "Norton". On November 3rd 1904 tornado touched down near US 15 just south of where Nortons merged with Centerville; damage caused by this storm totaled over $4 million ($ at current values). Many homes were destroyed or greatly damaged leaving many people homeless; fatalities occurred due primarily to roof instability caused by heavy wind gusts reaching speeds over . The college closed in 1892 following financial difficulties due to low enrollment and lack of funding from northerners living west of Columbus who were eager for higher education near their homes.
