Norton, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the seat of Morrow County. The population was 25,885 as of the 2010 census, making Norton one of the fastest-growing cities in Ohio. Norton is located on the Scioto River about 20 miles (32 km) south-southwest of Cleveland and 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Akron. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Norton was James Winchester who arrived in 1796 along with his family from Virginia. His son John Winchester founded Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1825 which became one of America's largest firearms manufacturers until it merged into Colt Industries in 1959. The original town site was near what is now Case Western Reserve University Campus; however, this location proved too wet for farming so a new town site was chosen about two miles farther east on a alluvial bed that formed when several rivers converged at an area now known as Norton Parkette Road (now US Route 422). A post office called Norton had been established by 1800 but no evidence exists to support its existence until 1810 when David Dunham sent two letters from Newark, Delaware to John Eliot Richardson asking for help with finding a post office for his new community: "Dear Mr. Richardson, I presume you have received my letter concerning our new settlement on the Scioto River ... I am confident that if you can find an appropriate place for us we will be happy to establish a Post Office here." In 1812 Richards sent another letter to Dunham asking him not to send any more letters because he had found an even better spot closer to Cleveland: "I perceive your difficulty has arisen from lack of information relative to our intended establishment on this river; however I am induced by your representations thereto, after much consideration, to approve your Application andforward you my copy." Commodore James Cammack recommended that Richardson build a military fort at what is now downtown Norton if he were ever attacked by Indians and Richardson decided against it because there was no means available locally or nationally then or later to fund such a project without government assistance. This decision helped give rise to the saying "Norton never did attack Cleveland". In 1830 Daniel Webster moved from western Pennsylvania into central Ohio and began purchasing land around Dayton where he planned eventuallyto erect an artificial water tower which would become one of Dayton's most famous landmarks due largely to Webster himself having also patented similar devices although never actually built them commercially! By 1836 over 140 people lived in webster apartmentsites scattered throughout central Dayton including many who would go on become millionaires thanks primarily theretoWebster's efforts! One such person became George Prentice who would develop Phineas Gage National Historical Park just north of downtown Dayton back home before becoming president & CEO/CEO Emeritus Brennan Hennigan Corporation/Prentice Development Company!! Forrest Tucker bought 60 acres northeast corner Of Main Street And High Street In 1909 Ft Wayne’s finest grocery store built next door still standing today !!
