Norton is a small town in the heart of Ohio, located on the banks of the Maumee River. The population was 6,595 at the 2010 census. Norton boasts an interesting history that can be traced back to 1795 when it was founded as a trading post by John Norton and his brother-in-law David Wilkinson. In 1814, Norton became part of the U.S. state of Michigan and in 1825, it merged with Mason County to form Morrow County. It lost its status as a county in 1907 when it was combined with Lucas County to form Stark County; but it regained its prior county government status in 1915 when Clinton Township was annexed into Norton. The first settlers in what is now Norton were Englishmen who arrived during the early 1800s and named their new home “Norton” after their landlord, Sir George Norton (1688-1764). In 1811, John Norton donated land for a school near present day Altoona; but because there wasn’t enough room for all of his donations on his farmstead, he also provided funding for another school – also called “Norton School” – which operated until 1828. During this time period, other pioneer families such as David Wilkinson and Amos Richardson helped contribute land to make up what is now Norton Golf Course. In 1830, Norton Mining Company established a mill on the riverbank which produced flour and feed for animals until 1863 when water levels began rising so quickly that mills had trouble meeting production quotas; however, norton residents refused to give up their milling privileges so they remained important forces behind local politics until about 1930. The community had another resurgence starting around 1990 due to several redevelopment projects which brought new life into old buildings or renovated older structures; including The Junction steakhouse & pub which reopened in 2000 after being closed for over 25 years On July 4th each year since 1992 (the birthday of John Norton), norton citizens gather at North Park (now North Park Elementary) square where they celebrate by playing games and eating hamburgers before marching down Main Street towards downtown where they hold an open-air barbecue party complete with live music nighttime while vendors sell hot dogs from portable stands outside! There are also several annual events such as Community Day (a picnic/picnic attended by all involved) held annually on Saturday preceding Memorial Day Weekend that features arts & crafts exhibits from various local businesses throughout downtown followed by dinner at one of downtown's favorite restaurants: Piggly Wiggly!
