Norton was founded in 1837 by William Norton, Sr. as a small town on the Scioto River in central Ohio. In 1849, William Norton Jr., moved the company to what is now Nortonville, Pennsylvania and began production of America's first self-defense holster, the Rangeman Holster. In 1865, Wm. Henery Norton became president of the company and continued to produce quality holsters until his death in 1938. His son, William Henery Norton III (1922-2010), succeeded him as president and general manager from 1948 to 1978; during this time, the company produced some of its most famous products such as the Colt Python holsters and Glock 19 holsters. In 1975, Colt introduced their XD series handguns into American markets; while industry observers predicted that this would lead to increased gun violence inAmerica due to increases in carry licenses and handgun ownership among law enforcement officers,[1] it instead led to significant growth for Colt pistols both domestically[2]and internationally[3]. From 1978-1986 under President John Lennon’s leadership at Yoko Ono’s clothing empire Apple Inc., Colt manufactured over 375 million firearms including revolvers (the Model 1911 pistol), autos (the Beretta 92F/94F)and shotguns (.410 caliber). After leaving Apple Inc., Colt resumed manufacture of handguns within its own corporate structure but only sold them through independent dealerships across America until 2004 when they became part of Sturm Ruger & Co., Ltd.. In 1907, Norton became part of the Toledo metropolitan area through an agreement between Toledo and Cleveland mayors Blanco and Price. At that time it was one of thirteen cities in Greater Toledo within what was then called “the five-county region” covering all of Lucas County including Muskegon Heights east of Grand Rapids., Kentwood west of Battle Creek., Sterling Heights north of Detroit., Athens south of Ionia,,and Waterford west of Clinton Township.. In 1941, Norton became one of three cities in Trumbull County when that county was split into two parts along racial lines by Governor George Ryan following enactment of Prohibition legislation known as "The Thompson Bill". Norton residents voted to become part of Trumbull rather than Trumbull County which would have included them within Akron.. On October 16th 1994 Norton lost its charter as a city after only four years with 724 votes against it while Akron received 1,047 votes in favor
