Norton was founded in 1824 by General Samuel Norton and his family. The name comes from a location called Norton's Ford on the Scioto River. The first settler in what is now Norton was Samuel Norton Jr., who arrived in 1824. He built a cabin near present-day North Main Street and the Scioto River. In 1830, he married Eliza Witherspoon and they began to farm around present-day South Main Street and between East High School and West High School (later known as Centerville). They had six children: five sons and one daughter. In 1840, General Samuel Norton Sr., died suddenly; his widow continued to farm with her five children while their father’s estate was probated and disputed (the daughters took over from him when he died). A year later, they sold their farm to John Weiser for $2 per acre (about $ Today). In 1853, three brothers – David Weiser, Amos Weiser, and Jonathan Weiser – bought the farming rights of their father’s estate from Eliza Norton; this gave them control of most of what is now Norton Township including parts of Centerville and South Main Street. In 1868, the name of the town was changed from Newton to Norton because of an effort by the Board of Education to improve communication between different schools in the community. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1 square mile (0.46 km2), all land. As of 2010 census data, there were 2,500 people residing in Norton Township: 928 male citizens (76%), 814 female citizens (24%), 0 noncitizen residents (). As per township law §5-3(a), no religious affiliation may be listed on public records “other than that which is stated on or under penalty for perjury” . According to2000 U.S Census figures there are 1% White ethnics living here while strung along with other minorities including black (1%) and Hispanic or Latino (4%). As per 2000 U.S Census figures there are 375 households outfitted with air conditioning according to Township Law §5-3(b). Of note 327 households were reported as being without heat during interviews done duringiggerment process for village data collection
