Norton is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, on the southern edge of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The population was 43,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of Greater Cincinnati and is adjacent to Dayton and Middletown. Norton was founded in 1811 by Nicholas Norton and became a town in 1824. The city was incorporated as Norton Township in 1868, becoming an independent city in 1903. In 1954, it merged with neighboring Dayton to form the current city of Norton-Dayton. The first European settlement in what is now Norton occurred when Nicholas Norton and his family arrived from Connecticut on July 12, 1811, during the Wabash War between Native Americans and United States forces under General Anthony Wayne. They established a small cabin near modern day Wrightstown on land that would become known as Fort Nashoba (now West Chester). Over time, other settlers followed Nicholas' lead until there were six families living at Fort Nashoba by 1830. By then, trading posts had been established along the Scioto River for goods brought back from India and China via boatloads of traders passing through this area on their way to marketplaces in Springfield or Akron. In 1834, one such post was moved from its original location along First Avenue south to what is now Fourth Street just east of Front Street due to overpopulation concerns caused by entrepreneurs such as John Dolan who built mills around this area which produced high levels of pollution not only inside but also out into downtown Cincinnati because much commerce took place on horseback or wagons going up and down First Avenue which at that time bisected Downtown! In order for early residents of what would become Norton to do any real business there they needed someplace where they could gather together once a week so they pooled their money together to buy two lots adjoining Third Street – what we now call King's Court – used services like gristmills being set up next door on Main Street except those were all destroyed by fire about 1840! This generated some speculation among people living nearby about who started this “new” community called Norton while today many know nothing more than stories passed down orally over time! But whatever started it all continued with new families moving here every few years until eventually everyone knew everyone else hereabouts! Eventually churches were built here too including one erected soon after incorporation (1868) called The Baptist Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints! There are still several old buildings left standing today including High School Annex #2 which stands just northeast of downtown off Elmwood Avenue across from Pfeffer Park Park; Collegiate Presbyterian Church/First Baptist Church (1904); Trinity Episcopal Cathedral/African Methodist Episcopal Zion church building 1928-2011; Muskingum County Courthouse/Pioneer courthouse 1911-1973; St Joseph's Roman Catholic Church (1901), Orchard Hills Baptist Church (1959), First Presbyterian Church (1920), Holy Cross Catholic Parish Hall 1964-1996; St Mary's Greek OrthodoxChurch 1974-present housing Developmentally disabled adults & children members program run by Sisters Of Charity USA since 2003 After incorporation as a township in 1868, Norton began growth process within itself slowly but surely culminating with annexations into neighborhoods like Whitehall Township westward annexing Brush Road South Side Extension annexed 1888 ; Beechmont Heights annexation completing 1912 ; Wellington annexed 1916 ; Tower Grove annexation following 1917 . During 1920s–1960s many businesses closed because technological advances made production obsolete such as electric lights etc., making it difficult for townsfolk if not impossible for them even though jobs opportunities constantly appeared however starting back up again due economic downturn during late 1970s recession most places went into decline again until 2007 when limited financial resources led to closure/desertion associated with global recession causing communities throughout Americaanderging towards bankruptcy
