Norton, Ohio is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio and has an estimated population of about 10,000. It is located on the Scioto River and was founded by General George Washington in 1788 as Fort Westmoreland. In 1814, it became part of the county of Holmes. The town was named for Major General Nathaniel Norton (1755-1820), a British officer who fought in the French and Indian War and led an expedition against Shawnee Indians in 1795.
In 1836, Norton became part of the newly formed United States after the Mexican-American War. Grant traveled through Medina County on his way from Vicksburg Peninsula southward to Cincinnati; he stopped at Norton for lunch before continuing on his journey. This event is considered one of the earliest manifestations of interstate transportation in America. During World War II, many workers from Northern Ohio signed up for military service during World War II efforts such as Operation Crossroads which aimed to provide food for troops stationed overseas across America; nortons were some of these areas most heavily bombed during this time period by American forces with an estimated bombings total amounting at least 4 million tons (Upton). After liberation from Nazi occupation in 1945 many veterans returned home which helped restore some life back into downtown Norton after years being abandoned due mainly to vandalism done by transient squatters that have taken over muchofthe downtown area throughout recent years
