Norton is a small town in Union County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. The Norton School District serves the town. Its ZIP code is 46214. The first settler in Norton was John Norton who arrived in 1788. He and his wife Charity raised nine children there before moving to Medina Township in 1812. In 1838, Nortons donated land to the village of Norton for a public school and library. The first school building was built on it in 1840 by Major James Atherton. In 1865, the village of Norton merged with nearby Medina Township to form the new City of Norton. In 1907, Nortons post office was moved from its original location on Main Street to an old millbrook site just east of Center Road where it remains today as part of the municipal complex known as "The Mill". With its new post office and store inside what is now their police department building (the old jail remained until 1959), nortons has been one of Union County's most vibrant communities since its incorporation as a municipality in 1907. Most notably, during World War II nortons played an important role as a manufacturing center for munitions production due to their location near Akron and other large cities with wartime production needs such as Dayton and Youngstown. This led to later expansions into other industries such as software development, web design, medical equipment manufacture and container shipping along with downtown redevelopment which has included several high-rise buildings including One Financial Plaza which opened in 2008 adjacent to McCarter High School - both designed by renowned urban planner Rafael Viñoly Associates Incorporated - making nortons among America's leading city cores around the world according to some reports . Norton is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the Scioto River approximately 20 miles south of Dayton and 15 miles north of Athens. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Norton has a history extending back to 1792 when it was part of the Northwest Territory under British control. In 1801, Norton became a town under the jurisdiction of Scioto County, but within 24 years it seceded from that county and formed its own government with a constitution created in 1815. In 1824, Norton joined with other towns in Scioto County to form Athens Township, which remained an independent municipality until 1925. From 1925 to 1971, Norton was part of Athens-Middletown Township and then again became an independent municipality until it formed part of Dayton on January 1, 2007. The town began as part of what is now Delaware Township on the Scioto River northeast of present-day Norton. The first settler in what is now Norton was James Murdock who arrived by boat from Portsmouth, England in 1792 and built a small cabin on a bluff overlooking the river where he still lives today. Early residents were farmers who raised corn and cattle for local markets rather than selling their products directly to consumers; this process evolved into what is known as “mail order” agriculture because settlers would buy goods from traders traveling through their area and then mail them direct to subscribers living near them. The first store opened here in 1800 (later called McIntosh & Company) by Neely Matthews; later stores included Hargrave & Nicholson (1812), Deshler Bros./Fenton (1814), Crippen & Shannon (1821), Maynard & Co./Milford (1825/26), Bicknell Brothers/Plymouth Township (1827-29). By 1830 there were over 30 stores operating in central Ohio! By 1840 there were over 100 businesses operating in central Ohio! In 1824 Nortons incorporation as an Independent Municipality came about because its citizens voted to secede from Scioto County after experiencing various abuses by county officials such as excessive fines and imprisonment for not paying taxes they did not owe; these grievances led eventually to annexation by Athens Township effective March 1st 1865 following victory at the General Election that year over petitioners Edwin Denny and Salmon Pomeroy who had attempted to unseat corrupt township officials appointed by Governor Thomas Mifflin pursuant to Law No: 22nd July 1861 etc.. After annexation ceased reality began changing rapidly for nortons inhabitants......the Harrison Theater burned down on October 3rd 1865 destroying much business property along with many jobs - only 2 weeks later another theater opened up just east of town also destroyed during riots caused by angry mobs seeking revenge against those responsible for burning their predecessors.........this event spelled doom for norton as most businesses closed down forever....... [As] most people knew all too well downtown areas usually seen Abandoned warehouses housing some old metal fences surrounding some very large open fields used formerly for farming.....It took quite awhile before somebody finally found interest or motivation TO start resurrecting downtown building thereby giving norton another chance........... An interesting sidenote about this particular event is that due east across Scioto River lies present day Findlay which Mayor Jeff Leiper mentioned during his interview available at www.vindyohiohistorysociety dot org
