Norton’s history stretches back to 1819 when it was founded by John Norton as a trading post on the Great Miami River. The town became an agricultural community in the mid-19th century and quickly developed into a center for gun trade and manufacturing. In 1906, Norton became one of the first towns in the country to pass an ordinance regulating handguns. The ordinance remained in place until 1986. In 1968, Norton residents approved a plan to build a new world-class high school and park adjacent to their existing civic center. By 1889, the city of Toledo had grown up around Lisbon and Norton, making Norton one of the most important towns in central Ohio. However, financial problems led to thetown's decline as businesses moved away or closed their doors without leaving behind any legacy or municipal infrastructure. Despite this problem however, Nortontown has continued to be home to many people who have made significant contributions to their community and county during its history including Rev.-Dr. Samuel Morse (founder of Morse Code), Dr.�John Lewis Hinton (founder of Hinton Rubber Company), Judge David Boren (elected 44th US president) and Mayor-President George Wuerffel (served from 1983 - 1991).
