In addition, Norton served as member of the Ohio House of Representatives from 1850 until his death in 1861. He was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Norton. George W. Norton Elementary School is located in Norton and it serves students through 8th grade. The school has been around since 1915 and opened its doors to students on Monday mornings when Lehman Intermediate School opened nearby on Tuesday mornings. During World War II, Norton High School became known as "Upper Arlington" due to its proximity to Arlington Heights Naval Air Station ( NAS Wilmette ). Norton, Ohio is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 2,895 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1812 by General John Norton and named for him. In 1888, Norton became the site of the first electric power plant in the United States when it was lit by Edison. The town has since become an important center for industrial production and commerce. The original land which now makes up Norton was part of the Township of Muskingum and Range 2 east of Greenfield along what is now State Route 562. The township was organized on December 12, 1812 under Governor Richard Yates with a total area of . On January 1, 1814 it became an independent village under Mayor James Hennigan with a total area of . The townships were again organized on April 14, 1825 with an area of ; however they only lasted until March 3, 1830 when they were merged into Muskingum County as part of that county's organization under Governor George Washington Carver. In 1888 Norton became the site of America's first electric power plant when it opened to public use following construction by entrepreneur Samuel Inskeep using his new Edison Electric Light Company line (later renamed American Electric Power). At its peak during World War II Norton had over 500 businesses employing over 6500 people producing goods ranging from automobiles to munitions; many factories closed after 1945 but have been reborn as downtown business districts or around other large retiree housing developments such as North Park Village and South Park Village near Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland Heights and Walled Lakeview Estates near Bowling Green State University in Toledo Hills. In 2000s some old factories closed down again due to economic decline while others regained their former glory through redevelopment into new businesses or neighborhoods such as North Park Village which includes several restaurants/bars/nightlife venues including Hard Rock Cafe & Gatorade Super Store; South Park Village has reverted back to its early agricultural roots with small-scale agriculture still taking place today within walking distance of most residents; Case Western Reserve University has reopened its main campus building adjacent to downtown making it home to two hospitals (one covers research medicine while another provides patient services); Walled Lakeview Estates features large homes built in 1937–1939 surrounded by smaller farmhouses typical for rural areas outside metropolitan Cleveland; Toledo Hills features multiple high-end shopping malls including Sears Tower and injected new life into downtown following years as a bedroom community for suburban homeowners; all these developments are mixed together creating a “walkable city” complete with dense concentration OF apartments/residential buildings close enough together so you can easily get around without having ToO walk
The Norton family settled in Ohio in the early 1800s. The first Norton to arrive in Ohio was Isaac Norton, who came to the state in 1807. He married Eliza Blackwell and they had four children: Isaac, James, Abigail, and Moses. In 1812, the Nortsons moved to what is now their current home on County Road 9 northwest of Tiffin. They continued to live there until their death in 1880.
