They largely went out of fashion after the war ended. Norton, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio. It is named after General James Wilkinson, who fought in the American Revolutionary War and became a general in the British army. The population was 7,057 at the 2010 census. In 1801, Norton Township was organized and Included Norton; it was renamed to Medina Township in 1803. In 1837, it was again renamed to Norton after General John A. Norton, Jr., who served as military governor of Michigan from 1840-1845 and as superintendent of Indian Affairs for the western United States from 1847-1851. As a result of its location on Lake Erie between Detroit and Cleveland, Norton acquired an extensive dockage and shipping capabilities which made it one of the most important towns on the Great Lakes region during its time as an agricultural center. In 1863, when Union forces invaded Kentucky during The Civil War, they moved through Medina Township towards Toledo on their way to invade Canada). On July 10th they were skirmished with Confederate troops near Middletown (now Xenia) while en route to Fort Donelson opposite Chattanooga; Union cavalry used this opportunity to cut off Confederate retreat back into Shelby County before arriving at Toledo crowded with wounded men could be evacuated back home by boat across Lake Erie On November 29th 1862 three weeks after General Ulysses S Grant's march through Kentucky ended with Vicksburg being taken by Union troops under General Sherman – five days before Christmas – Norton residents went door-to-door giving gifts of candy or other refreshments to soldiers along their route Following World War II there were several large industrial plants built in that area including: Ford Motor Company’s Akron Works (from 1919), Alcoa’s Flint Hills plant (from 1945), Allis Chalmers’s Lima site (from 1951), Honeywell International’s Dormont Site (from 1984) and many others over time There are now only a few small businesses left remaining within downtown areas such as the old Sears building which has been converted into apartments and part of a new development called “The Gables” housing units for veterans

Despite these obstacles, however, Norton remained an important community for many years until it fell victim to multiple fires that destroyed much of its physical evidence during the late 19th century.
Norton was founded in 1814 by Amos Norton and his wife Nancy. The city is located in the central portion of the Ohio Valley, about halfway between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. At that time, it was a small village with a population of about 350 people. It grew rapidly during the 19th century, thanks to its location and natural resources. In 1868, Norton became the seat of government for Green Township, which lie parallel to Norton on both banks of the Monongahela River. This arrangement lasted until 1975, when Green Township was dissolved and its land merged into Township Heights Borough.
