Norton, Ohio is a town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,676 at the 2010 census. Norton was platted in 1827 by Captain George Henson and his wife Charity. It is named after General Robert E. Lee's home state of Virginia. The first settler in Norton was John Eaton who arrived in 1828. He built a log cabin on the east side of the village square. In 1830, Eaton married Susannah Smith and they opened a store in the center of the village square with two floors of merchandise. They also raised chickens and pigs on their farm west of town limits to provide food for their family until they moved to Cincinnati in 1840 when Susannah died and Eaton married again." In 1834, Captain George Henson claiming part of what is now Medina County granted patent to Simon Gentry for 640 acres (2 km²). This grant included land northeast of present-day Norton which he donated for township development." Henson's donation set off a years long process by which citizens donated additional land throughout northwestern Ohio for township development." The township was organized on March 14, 1837 under the name "Norton Township", from parts of Cuyahoga and Ottawa Counties."
