Norton is a city in the southeastern part of Ohio, United States. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Warren County and home to the University of Akron. The first Europeans to visit what is now Norton were French traders in 1688. A trading post was established there by Colonel George Rogers Clark in 1795 and it became a city on December 3, 1834. At that time, Norton had a population of just over 100 people. In 1857, Norton became one of the ten counties admitted to Ohio as part of the Union. The city grew rapidly during the 1860s and 1870s due to its position as an important transportation hub for coal traffic from mines in neighboring Kentucky and Pennsylvania. In 1907, northern Ohio congressman John Minton proposed that Norton be made an official U.S.–Canada border town because Canadian lumber mills were located there and American farmers needed access toCanadian markets for their goods. Minton's idea gained some support from both sides of the aisle but didn't receive consideration from Congress until 1912 when Edwin Hastings succeeded Minton as congressman from Ohio's 1st congressional district after he won election as president pro tempore of the United States Senate without having run for office before then In 1916–17, youngood Cleveland mayor James Laughlin pushed through legislation creating public housing projects in parts of downtown Cleveland while Mayor Tom Bradley led efforts to annex much of Newark into Cleveland so that it would have more economic clout with respect to Greater Cleveland ; however these efforts failed when they encountered stiff opposition among Democratic officials within Northeastern Ohio . Norton become an officially incorporated city on October 25, 1924; its original name being "Norton Township". "For many residents including many who had grown up here or knew someone who did," wrote historian David Sibley about Norton during his book "The Making Of America", "the only thing they could think about other than getting rich quickly was finding ways not to live here." This apathy towards life outsideof City Hall caused much social unrest which often led to lawlessness inside City Hall itself- something which continued until finally becoming fully addressable by police forces within City Hall itself starting around 1990s under Mayor Joe Scigliano who created a culture where crime rates began decreasing significantly beginning in 2000s . The first firearms hats were created in 1847 by a man named John Fenton. The design was based on the then-current fashion for military headgear, which consisted of a tight-fitting military hat with a high crown and wide brim. In 1861, Captain Samuel Butler of the Rhode Island Volunteers commissioned Fenton to create a new firearm hat design that would become known as the Butler hat. The Butler hat was designed to protect soldiers from sun and rain while they conducted operations in field conditions. The success of this new design led to other manufacturers producing similar hats, including Colonel Amos Kendall's Western States Armory in 1872. By 1895, nearly every regiment within the United States had adopted or been issued a firearm hat, making it an integral part of soldiering culture. In 1814, Ohio became the 28th U.S. state and the first in the Union to recognize slavery. The Wabash Company purchased 4,000 acres of land in what is now Norton, Ohio from John Morton for $1,500. The company built a small brick house on the property and named it Fort Dearborn after Michigan's Dearborn County seat. In 1827, the fort was renamed Fort Armstrong after General Andrew Armstrong who had been instrumental in creating West Point Military Academy in New York City. In 1830, Fort Dearborn was renamed Fort Worth after Texas's Willacy County seat of Dallashill.
