Norton is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, population 9,711 as of the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1814 by Nicholas Norton and named for him. It was incorporated as a municipality in 1869. Norton is located near the confluence of the Muskingum and Scioto Rivers. The area that now would become Norton was first settled by Shawnee Indians who lived there from 1795 to 1800 according to one source. Others say it was part of the land given to them by Britain as part of Treaty No. 7 on July 20, 1800 which ended the American Revolutionary War and ceded most of New York and Pennsylvania to France. The town site at what is now known as State Road 149 was platted on March 2, 1814 by Nicholas Norton, a justice of the peace from Canfield Township in Stark County, Ohio Territory (now Delaware County). The name "Norton" originated with this initial settlement; it originally meant "place where deer grazed." 2 miles east of present-day Norton along SR 149 were two small settlements called Newtown and Eastville; these villages were abandoned after Indian removal efforts began in1837 because they were too close to what would become Fort Wayne (in today's Indiana). In 1835–36Nicholas Norton founded an academy at beautiful Mount Vernon west of town that became famous for its Latin school programs for Native Americans living eastward on Muskingum River below Harrisonburg Dam between 1840 and 1850s when those children ate only white bread until their parents made them switch to cornmeal mush diet if they wanted any education beyond hunting skills necessary for life among their tribesmen living downstream about 100 miles away from their homes during those years according to some sources including one written about circa 1860s by Gouverneur Morris himself while he served as United States commissioner overseeing Indian Affairs under President James K. Polk – back then “the father’s favorite son” – Morris supervised changes brought about by federal legislation such as Act 6 Of 1861 creating new agencies like Bureau Of Indian Affairs responsible for all aspects affecting native nationals living westward after America’s entry into World War 1A document establishing policy regarding western lands acquired through various treaties concluded with nations bordering on or sharing eastern Canada/US during previous era which included Louisiana Purchase (1803) & Mexican–American War (1846), plus others resulting from Organic Acts passed during timeperiod including Land laws enacted following Revolution/Emancipation Proclamation leading up to Civil war Railroad building beginning concurrent with conquest & occupation thereof & development@ fortieth parallel In 1870 City Council voted unanimously to change its name from Union Township purchase made May 10th 1865 From Morrow Township purchased Jan 25th 1870 To Norton City Limits

Norton was settled in 1790 by John Norton and his family. Norton is a small, unincorporated community located in Morrow County, Ohio, United States. The community was named for northerner George Norton. It had a post office from 1854 to 1881. In 1907, the town of Norton merged with the larger town of Athens to form the new city of Athens-Norton. The city was renamed Athens-Norton again in 1951. The village of Norton formed around a Presbyterian church on the banks of the Scioto River. A schoolhouse and six other buildings were built there between 1852 and 1862, but it burned down in 1865. A new school building and pastor's house were completed at what is now West Nashua Avenue and Euclid Street in 1903. This building served as the nucleus of what would become Athenaeum High School until it closed in 1957; then Athens Technical High School became its replacement. In 1907, Nortons saw their first commercial development when Wm Fenton bought land east of Euclid Street for $8,000 to build an ice cream parlor called "Fenton's". After years of business growth and expansion, Fenton's failed to make a profit starting in 1914 so he sold his interest to another entrepreneurnamed Harry Jenkins who operated it for 42 years before selling it to Edward Jaffe who operated it until 2003 when he donated it back to Nortons Township trustees., Aurora Broadcasting Corporation owned by Ted Turner purchased this property from Wm Fenton on May 5th 2007 making it home ground for their Akron based sports radio station WTNH-AM which has been playing live games nationally since 2003. Turner also operates TBS' TNT network out of nearby Orange City.
Norton, Ohio was a small town in southern Ohio until the outbreak of the American Civil War. The Union army attacked on April 12, 1861, and quickly took over Norton. The residents gathered together, stockpiling food and munitions to fight the war. On May 1, 1861, Norton passed to the Union as part of the states that seceded from the United States.
