Norton was founded in 1812 by John Norton and his wife Rebecca. The first store in town was built on Main Street. In 1868, Norton Post Office opened and remained open until 1951. According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of , all land. The name "Norton" originated from John Norton's purchase of land in what is now Stark County for $3 per acre (equivalent to $ today). He named his new settlement after himself and his wife Rebecca. The post office continued to be called "Norton" until 1951 because it had been established as an agricultural outpost with no commercial activity going on until then. During World War II, many residents worked for American troops stationed in that vicinity as workers on farms or in other businesses such as meatpacking plants or munitions factories. As a result of this wartime employment, there are numerous military installations scattered throughout northeastern Ohio including Fort Monmouth (near Uniontown), Seymour Johnson Air Force Base ( near Kent State), Beech-Nut Mills ( near Berea), Wilson Air Force Base (near Lima) and Hancock Air National Guard Base (in Scioto County). In June 1945 a group of local high school students started something that would become known as "The Norton Boys." They were inspired by their experience during World War II when they had seen servicemen returning home with new skills such as welding and carpentering which they could use to improve their families' standard of living; however these boys realized that even though they were coming back into civilian life they still lacked some knowledge about how things actually worked outside the military setting so they decided to start learning about cars and trucks Assembly Line work at General Motors plant nearby while also taking classes at Blackford Community College which offered automotive related degrees programmes like vehicle engineering etc.; eventually this group became known as The VW Club Of America/Norton
