North Royalton is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now North Royalton was John Hine, who came to the area in 1814. In 1826, George Washington Scott founded the village of Scottstown east of present-day North Royalton on land purchased from Solomon Marcy. Scottstown grew rapidly and by 1830 had a population of 100 residents. By 1840, there were 1,200 residents living in Scottstown and 500 residents in North Royalton. By 1850, both villages had grown to 3,000 people each and Scottstown also had a schoolhouse and two pastors. In 1853, James Waddell bought from Solomon Marcy 5 acres (20 ha) near modern-day North Royalton for $100 cash. Waddell erected a small log cabin on this site and named it "Wadsworth." The community grew quickly; by 1860 it boasted 10 shops and 50 homes. In 1865 Waddell sold his interest in Wadsworth to Jno Averill Whitehurst for $2 per acre (0·68 ha). Whitehurst renamed the community "RoyalTON" after his ancestral home at discarded Carleton Manor near Ottawa Township., Ontario Canada where he lived until his death in 1907. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), much of rural Muskingum County was engaged in service as troops or civilians on either side of the war effort including NorthRoyalton which saw its share of skirmishes along with other townships such as Lebanon Heights and Ashtabula Township (). On October 12th 1861 seven citizens - three men - were killed when Confederate cavalryman William Tecumseh Sherman rode into town while they were eating dinner inside their own restaurant & post office; this event has been called "The Massacre" & remains an unsolved mystery today. After the war ended General Ulysses S Grant ordered all Union soldiers must leave Muskingum County except for those troops under General Nathan Bedford Forrest’s command which continued operations under control of local commanders until 1865 when Federal troops left town altogether. Boyd v Mason (1872) – A case involving land owned by James Boyd contesting title to mineral rights over some hills outside present day North Royalton reached court but no decision was made due to lack evidence. In 1876 local resident Jacob Calkins donated 2 acres (8 ha) northward from where he lived south of Wadsworth towards what is now Delaware Avenue for$1 per year to be used as a public square according to deeds dated November 26th 1775 & February 3rd 1776. This donation became known as Calkins Square. On July 11th 1888 Jesse Owens won gold medals at the Berlin Olympics making him one of only two Americans ever awarded Olympic citizenship. At about this time negroes began moving into white neighborhoods throughout Northeast Ohio specifically around Cleveland so many black families moved into property eastbound I-480 that formed Arlington Heights
