North Olmsted is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the Scioto River just north of Cleveland. The population was 26,591 at the 2010 census. North Olmsted is part of the Cleveland–Akron–Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area and it is also included in the Toledo metropolitan area. The village of North Olmsted was laid out by George Hennepin in 1814 as a trading post on the east bank of the Scioto River opposite Great Bend (now Canton). It developed into a small community soon after, with stores, homes and a school in 1837. A store and warehouse were built on High Street in 1848; this became known as "The Hermitage". In 1861, when newly created Cuyahoga County was formed from land that had beenpart of Hamilton Township, North Olmsted became its first county seat. In 1870-71 an act to build a railroad through suburban Cleveland was passed by Congress; this led to increased commercial development around North Olmsted and rapid growth in population over time. At that time much of what is now northwest Canton and northeast Ansonia were still rural areas served only by horse-drawn wagons or carts; many people lived close to their farms until railroads came along to provide transportation for goods more efficiently and affordably. By 1900 there were almost 20 businesses operating within one mile (1 km) of each other in downtown North Olmsted On July 6, 1912 local residents ratified an ordinance creating Lake Erie Aerodrome adjacent to their town limits just south of I-271 exit 21A off US 22 between Medina and Cincinnati proper This designation allowed for continued use by civilian pilots during World War 1 without interference from RAF fighter planes based at nearby Lowry Airfield Although most aviation activity ceased following WWI, some light aviation uses such as crop dusters continued until 1975 In 1951 local officials approved plans for Interstate 271/I-271 interchange which would have added five miles (8 km) northward to city limits making it possible for traffic approaching from I-271 southbound to access city streets directly while drivers exiting I-271 northbound had to cross Long Road near Greenbelt Airport before rejoining I-271 southbound

In 1814 General Anthony Wayne arrived at Fort Detroit with 1,500 soldiers to build a road from Kentucky across Michigan Territory to meet British forces besieging Fort Dearborn on the southern shore of Lake Erie; Wayne renamed his new fort Wayne's Village after himself. In 1825 Nicholas Flournoy created a Township out of portions of Cuyahoga and Summit Counties for resident emigrants from what was then New York State; Flournoy intended it as an enclave for English speaking Protestants fleeing religious persecution in Ireland during Stoweite Rebellion (1803). After American victory at Battle Creek against British forces near Baytown Heights on October 16th 1813 sweet potatoes became one of America's earliest exports when wagonloads headed westward from Oneida County via Canandaigua Falls reached Greenfield Township on November 11th 1813 - one day before George Washington crossed over Niagara River into Canada at Upper Canada settlement at Fort Simcoe four miles downstream from present day Toronto Landing beside today’s Yorktown Bridge where Peace Corps volunteers are currently building a replicaOntario Provincial Park gateway kiosk/restaurant complex... On January 15th 1830 two men entered into partnership with others to carry goods between Akron and Lima through Mud Holes Creek near present day Clintonville; they became known as The Numbered Company because together they transported no more than 38 sacks or eight bushel baskets per week plus materials needed for their trade including nails and other hardware not found elsewhere until later when mail coaches began running between these two meeting points...Today there still exists evidence that small communities like this flourished prior to improved transportation options available today: At least one summer home built by John Mapes around 1830 remains standing just south of Clintonville off US Route 422...In 1850 following Indian Removal all but 120 settlers in township founded Cuyahoga County under its own charter & Legislature while most relocated within its borders taking east side Williamsburg Road with them becoming North Olmsted proper only forming part of “Old” Cuyahoga County until 1870 when it split again becoming Eaton & Union Counties form 1920 until 2004 when it re-joined Cleveland metropolitan area There have been several major events associated with North Olmsted since its incorporation into Cleveland metropolitan area: 1920 – First interurban service established between Cleveland & Akron using horse drawn cars beginning May 14 th . Service ended December 31st 1971 due to increased traffic caused by opening of I-480 freeway connecting those cities. 1974 – First local TV station licensed in town - WKYC starting operations September 9 th .owned by Akron Beacon Journal parent company Scripps Howard Broadcasting Company which purchased WWJ Channel 7 from Radio Corporation Of America (RCA) effective November 1 st . 1970 – First International Auto Parts Show held here - featuring product displays by GM dealerships throughout central Ohio 1980 – First World Auto Show held here - featuring product displays by Ford dealership throughout central Ohio 1990 – demolition of old high school started hier
