Beattie was a prominent businessman in North Olmsted and he donated the money to purchase the mount. The mount became known as Beattie's Mount and it has been used ever since. The city was named after Olmsted County, Michigan, which had been part of the Northwest Territory before it became America. The first U.S. post office in North Olmsted was established on November 5, 1812, with John Webber as its first postmaster. In 1830,Olmsted Township split off from Northampton Township to become its own municipality under the name "Olmsted City." On May 24, 1871, it merged with the neighboring town of Cleveland to form Cleveland-North Olmsted-Cleveland Combined Statistical Area (CSA).
In 1803, the area that is now North Olmsted was part of the Northwest Territory. In 1812, the territory was divided into two parts, and the northwest part became Ohio. The area around today's North Olmsted was first settled by Europeans in the 1780s. The first white settler in what is now North Olmsted County was John McLaughlin in 1788.
