North Olmsted, Ohio is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 23,868 at the 2010 census. North Olmsted is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Beavercreek Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Olmsted" is derived from a Swedish name for an area around Lake Erie called Uppsala (now Ontario). The first Europeans to settle in what is now North Olmsted were the Muskegonians who arrived by ship from Canada in 1796 and built Fort Dearborn on the south shore of Grand River. They abandoned it after a year when they discovered French Canadian traders living near them. A group of American Revolutionary War veterans, led by Captain George Rogers Clark, moved into nearby Union Township in 1798 and founded Green Township on land that had been bought from the British forces at Fort Niagara by General Washington. Lieutenant Colonel John Prentice also settled there in 1802. On December 12, 1814, General David Hunter burned down the old village green near present-day downtown North Olmsted after learning that British forces were planning to attack his troops encamped there

On July 1, 1907, North Olmsted became a charter city with its own government. The city population reached 100,000 in 1950 and 300,000 by 1970.
