North Olmsted, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and part of the Dayton–Cincinnati metropolitan area. The population was 26,853 at the 2010 census, making it the fourth-most populous town in Dayton County. North Olmsted has been home to North Canton since 1837, when it became a town on the east side of what is now Lake Erie. The first settler in what is now North Olmsted was George Stephenson, who founded Greenville on the south side of present day Ottawa Street in 1812. In 1837, after becoming a town on the east side of Lake Erie following its incorporation as a village by order of General David Dixon, North Olmsted's name was changed to "Canton." The first post office opened in Canton on July 7, 1837. In 1865, during America's Civil War (the American Civil War), Canton sided with Union forces over Confederate forces and joined Union City as an officially sanctioned city under martial law while Fort Donelson lay besieged by Confederate forces upstream from Cincinnati. As such, Canton became one of only two municipalities in Dayton County that did not fall to Union forces (the other being Wheeling). During World War II much activity took place within and around Canton due to its strategic location between three large military installations: US Army Air Forces Bomber Command's Eighth Air Force's Hickory Hill Complex near Cleveland Municipal Airport and US Navy destroyer bases at Great Lakes Naval Station and Mare Island Naval Shipyard just north of downtown Cleveland; as well as Shipping Point Marina located several miles offshore off Sandusky Bayetts Headland which served as an anchorage for submarines used by both Britain and Japan during World War II; along with numerous industrial plants built or leased for war purposes including Ballantyne Chemical Works[1] (now part of Dow Chemical Co.)[2], Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s Akron factory,[3] Canisto Oil Refinery,[4] Brown & Root Electrical Supply company[5], Lorenz Semiconductor Corporation’s Ann Arbor plant,[6] A&P Supermarket chain store at Euclid Heights Shopping Center[7]; with many factories closed due to wartime restrictions on employment; including textiles giant Singer Sewing Machine Company’s Seward Park Factory; foundry works run by United States Steel Corporation mainframe manufacturer Westinghouse Electric Corporation – until these were dismantled for scrap metal after 1945 The Second World War also saw significant economic development within canton taking form into various new businesses such as aluminum smelters Koppers Glass Works Incorporated and Alcoa Aluminum Corp.; truck manufacturers Ford Motor Company [8], Chevrolet Pontiac GMC Truck Division [9]; rubber companies Edwin Jagger Rubber Co., John Litton Tire & Rubber Co., Matson Harriman Rubber Manufacturing Company; chemical plants such as Allis Chalmers' Toledo facility producing lead acid batteries [10]; aircraft manufacturer Republic Aviation Corporation later known as Boeing.[11][12][13][14][15] With thousands upon thousands Of jobs created throughout eastern OH thanks largely to munitions production via Ballantyne Chemical Works - something that continues even today thanks to local companies like GEICO Insurance Services - Cantone quickly become known among locals simply as "The Town". Despite this rapid growth however there were still some issues faced during this time period such as race riots that occurred sporadically throughout communities across America caused by newly formed black nationalist groups seeking self-promotion through violence . Additionally during this time period residents experienced increased taxes which resulted in slower economic growth overall . However despite these negative aspects some people from canton continue working hard towards creating positive changes over the years culminating in their current municipality today
In 1812, North Olmsted was part of the Northwest Territory. It was organized as a town in 1815. The town became a village in 1837 and then a city in 1903. In 1951, it became the capital of Ohio.
