North Canton, Ohio is a town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. North Canton is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Stark metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1821 by General Nathan Bedford Forrest and settlers from Kentucky and Tennessee. It became an incorporated village in 1827. The first post office in North Canton was established in 1826, and the name of the town was changed to North Canton on March 10, 1830. The first store in town opened on October 1, 1830. On December 12, 1830, a joint meeting of all the townships within Stark County voted to become a consolidated municipality under one name; this action created what is now known as "North Canton." On January 20, 1836, George Stephenson built the Erie Canal here and made it available for transportation between Cleveland and Toledo without having to go through Toledo or Detroit. This improved trade so much that freight rates began to decline rapidly here that merchants decided to move their businesses away from North Canton altogether and form new communities such as Avondale (1837), Centerville (1838), Fairview Heights (1841), Delaware Heights (1843), Uniontown (1845), etc., until finally Akron’s incorporation into Cuyahoga County on December 4 of that year put an end to any attempt by North Canton residents to revive their once thriving business community. In 1840-41 there were three polls conducted in district 3 which included parts of present day north canton east side main street including Spicer Street east side

North Canton, Ohio is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio and part of the Dayton-Middletown metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population was 18,871. North Canton is one of several towns on the "Canton-Dayton" metroplex that are home to multiple universities and colleges, including University of Dayton and Wright State University. The early history of North Canton can be traced back to 1795 when it was founded as an agricultural village by two brothers named John and David Starr. The village rapidly grew into a small town with a population over 100 in 1830. By 1840, North Canton had become an important center for trade and industry in eastern Ohio due to its location at the junction of two major wagon roads connecting Cincinnati with points west. In 1848, local merchants formed the Canton Manufacturing Company which established a foundry and mill complex on Main Street within what is now the heart of downtown Canton. This business success led to increased development around Main Street; by 1870, most buildings along this street were Frame houses (now known as Victorian architecture). In 1850, North Canton became part of newly organized Scioto County after it was relocated from Warren County following a boundary dispute between Scioto County and Hamilton Township (which lay east of present-day Hilliard). During this time period, much progress was made in developing rural areas near Cleveland through initiatives such as public school building programs and land grants to farmers. After being annexed by Dayton in 1868, North Canton experienced rapid growth during both its annexation period as well as during later years when it became one of Dayton's most vibrant neighborhoods characterized by brick tenements built throughout its central business district dating back to the late 19th century throughout much older portions of town that have been demolished or preserved today such as Onondaga Avenue between Fourth Ward Road/Upper Arlington Boulevard/Memorial Drive NW - now Canal Fulton Place -and Fifth Ward Road/Washington Avenue NE - currently Tower Center Drive SW - now Phillipsburg Pike SE -was once known since before 1800 called Old Town Green located just southwest corner Third Ward Road/Ninth Circuit Avenue NW containing many prehistoric earthworks & burial mounds dating backto circa 400 BC
The area now including North Canton, Ohio was part of the Northwest Territory in 1787. The first permanent European settlers arrived in 1792, when John Orr and his family arrived from Ireland. They erected a log cabin on the present site of Canton. In 1803, John Cook founded the town of Cookstown and named it after himself. The first school was built in 1805. The village of North Canton was organized as a town in 1827. It became a city in 1898.
