North Canton, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Ross County. The population was 32,909 at the 2010 census, making it the sixth-largest city in Ross County. North Canton is located on the north side of the Scioto River, about 15 miles (24 km) east of Cleveland and 20 miles (32 km) west of Akron. The first settler in what is now North Canton was George Westfall, who built a cabin near what is now downtown on July 4, 1813. After being burned down in 1813, North Canton received a new coat of paint and a new name - "Canton" - in honor of General George Washington's victory over Great Britain at Yorktown in 1781.
