North Canton, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Ross County. As of the 2010 census, the population was 57,171. The city is located on the southern edge of the United States panhandle and straddles what is now Lake Erie and the Canadian province of Ontario. North Canton became an independent city on March 1, 1801, from part of Athens Township in Perry County. The first settler in North Canton was Isaac Hocking who arrived in 1797 with his family from Britain and founded a small log cabin on what is now School Street. In 1800 he bought out Isaac Chappell's interest in Hocking's Landing (now downtown). By 1800 there were 12 blacksmiths, four carpenters, one wheelwright and six farmers living near present-day I-675 at their original village site east of Canal Road. However little progress was made until after President George Washington visited Ohio during his "mission to America" tour in 1802." In 1803 Cincinnati entrepreneur Nicholas Biddle established a gristmill on Canfield River where Grange Road meets I-675 today; this mill would become one of many that would make North Canton into an important manufacturing center during the 19th century thanks to its location along waterwayside access to raw materials for many companies such as Singer Sewing Machine Company (1868), Ballantine Brewery (1892) and Thomas Edison's General Electric Company (1913). During these years some new residents also arrived: John Sutherlin came from England aboard HMS Beagle voyage around South America between 1810-1814; he purchased land north of present day Canal Road which he called Waterloo Township; James Waddy settled downstream near modern day Uniontown while Daniel Boone crossed State Route 22 south into Pennsylvania about 1800 route followed by early settlers including William Clark soon afterwards reaching Nilesville before descending south under current US 287 across Racine Creek just northwest of town then continuing further west past contemporary downtown Crossing Pointe towards Toledo The township name "Waterloo" may have been derived from this initial settlement as well as due to other early activities associated with it like wagonning logs down Raccoon Creek for transportation overland via waypoint known today as Waterloo Logging Path which crossed Racine Creek below Warsaw Dam when completed circa 1830 . There are several older townships still extant within Ross County including Buttersworth (), Greenlawn (), Mount Vernon () and Westfield ().
