North Canton, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Stark County. The population was 61,898 at the 2010 census. North Canton is located on the north-central border of Stark County on the Scioto River. The settlement that would become North Canton was founded by settlers from Pennsylvania in 1795, during the Northwest Ordinance debates over land west of the Allegheny Mountains. It became a town in 1802 and then a city in 1827. The current name for North Canton comes from its location on what were then Indian tribes' hunting grounds east of what is now Akron,OH Founded as "Nanticoke" by Captain John Stevens in 1795 while he was commandant of Fort George Wright on the Scioto River, North Canton quickly developed into a busy trading post with connections to Pittsburgh and other settlements along the Great Lakes region. In 1802 it became one of five cities withinauga County when that area was organized; it remained an unincorporated community until its annexation by Akron in 1928. North Canton is a census-designated place in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 391 at the 2010 census. It has been the home of North Canton Native American Tribe since 1795. The first permanent settler in what is now North Canton was Nicholas Sowers, who arrived on July 24, 1795. He and his wife did not claim land until 1814 when they homesteaded . Other early settlers were Samuel Unsworth (1798), Daniel Goodrich (1800), John Blackledge (1802), Ebenezer Beall (1804), John Wickersham (1806), George White (1808). The first school in what is now North Canton was built in 1812 by Reverend John Denton at the mouth of the Scioto River. In 1824, a log cabin was erected on the site of today's central square to serve as a public schoolhouse. The first town meeting had been held on October 12, 1800, to select a constable and assess taxes for $100. On December 2, 1800, Joseph Henschel resigned his post as constable to become justice of the peace and was elected president of the town board. In 1823, local residents voted to rename their village "Canton" after Anthony Wayne's victory in the general election as president pro tempore ofthe United States Senate from Ohio; but it reverted back to its original name two years later when Wayne left office and Isaiah Watkins became acting president pro tempore vernacular education began with three students enrolled in agriculture classes offered by Rev. David Rankin beginning September 6th 1825; however only one student graduated from this class – Levi Soonesson attendance increased rapidly due to donation by Mr. Rankin’s widow which led to more classroom space and teachers being hired . By 1830 there were six classrooms ; during 1830-36 an additional room was added for female students teaching reading and writing under instruction from Miss Sarah Winchester . Female enrollment continued increasing until 1840 when it peaked at eleven girls including five “native” daughters of Chief Tecumseh Lodge No 3 “ native” refers to those natives not white both men and women who were selected for their skills or talents such as basket making , Southern Turnpike Road development started during this time period included several stores opened up by Germans along South Main Street lots numbered 5 thru 8 near corner School House lot number 10 some houses also burned down during this time
