North Canton is the county seat of Mahoning County and home to the University of Akron. The area now known as North Canton was first settled by Europeans in 1797. It became a town in 1834 when it joined the newly formed Mahoning County. In 1868, it became part of the new Toledo metropolitan area and remain so since that time. The city was founded on October 25, 1797 by Captain Johnstown and his men after they reached what is now North Canton from their journey down the Ohio River. They named their settlement for General George Washington's army that had just fought at Battle of Saratoga in New York City six weeks earlier. At first there were few buildings and only a small number of people living hereabouts because transportation was difficult to come by except by boat or wagons overland which took days or even weeks to make the trip from Philadelphia or Baltimore(). In 1798-99 an act of congress provided for establishing schools within three years following its passage but no such schools were built until 1830 due to lack of funds (). In 1840-41 (the same year asxton Township was organized), North Canton voted to join what then constituted Summit County (now Stark County). However, this vote never came into force because Summit refused to recognize our town's right to do so without any action from North Canton itself (). The first school building erected in North Canton may have been constructed on West Market Street between School Road and High Street around 1800 (). It has been suggested that this structure served as both a schoolhouse and store until about 1825 when it burned down (). That same year also saw another building erected on South Market Street east of First Avenue (), known today as the Municipal Building which served as court house/ jail for more than fifty years until being replaced in 1976 with present day Court House Square ().
