The area that now makes up north Canton was first settled by families from Pennsylvania in 1795-1796. They were followed by English settlers in 1803. In 1837, John Snyder founded a flour mill in what is now north Canton and it became one of the largest mills in Ohio until it closed around 1970. In 1865, James Aitken opened a bakery in what is now south Canton and this also became one of the largest baking businesses in northeast Ohio until 1984 when it closed shop. Additionally, there are several hotels and restaurants located within walking distance of central business district including Barnes & Noble Bookstore and Denny's restaurant/bar which both opened their doors during the 1990s post-recession period when downtown business had begun to rebound again after being hit hard by economic downturns elsewhere throughout Northeast Ohio. Today, north Canton continues to be an important center for trade with its location on I-75 as well as its status as an agricultural hub with many farms producing soybeans, corn, wheat and other crops

North Canton is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Stark County. The population was 21,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron–Canton–Muncie, OH Combined Statistical Area. North Canton is located on the southern edge of Cleveland and is bordered by Stark County to the north, Medina County to the east, and Ashland County to the south. The first European settlers in what would become North Canton were French Canadian traders who arrived in 1795. In 1803, Ohio became a state; as part of that process, it became known as "The Land Grant State". The area that now forms North Canton was then organized as an unorganized township under Middle Township trustees on July 1, 1824. On December 15, 1825 – one year after Ohio made its official donation of land to be used for education – trustees adopted a resolution creating a school district named for John Davenport (the father of George Washington). Davenport had been influential in developing early American education reform movements and his donations helped establish Jamestown Female Academy (now Northeastern State University) in 1830 and Stow-On-the-Wabash Female Seminary (now Northern Illinois University) in 1836 both within North Canton limits.
