North Canton is a village in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,604 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area. North Canton was founded in 1814 by fugitives from the American Revolution who had escaped to Canada. The first settler in what is now North Canton was James Caldwell, who built a cabin on the bank of the Olentangy River. The Village of North Canton was organized in 1837 and named for its location north of Akron on Delaware Avenue. By 1860, most of present-day Stark County had been created, and within its boundaries were two other villages – Fountain Hills and Strongsville – as well as North Canton itself. In 1935, during the Great Depression, many residents left their homes for jobs in Akron or Cleveland because there were no open positions in Stark County. However, after World War II new industry began to grow in town and more people returned home; by 1990 North Canton's population had increased to 12,000 people. During much of its history until it lost its status as a village after 2000 (when it merged with neighbouring Fountain Hills), North Canton enjoyed some excellent educational opportunities thanks to local schools including Stroudsburg High School (now known as USHIS) which became one of America's first online high school systems; also included were three small colleges: Northern Illinois University-Lakeside (opened 1936), Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (founded 1865), and Shaw University (opened 1938).
